I am doing a frame up on a '74 Renegade. The emergency (parking) brake had been removed so I bought all new cables (3) and the equalizer. I have the two rears installed in the drums, but don't know where or how to route them. Where does the equalizer go? Am I missing a bracket or something? Do they mount in the crossmember?

I think the 74 should be the same as my 73. Mine come off the brake drum and go between the spring and frame, up along the inside of the frame, over the crossmember, then loop forward above the gas tank, cross each other then are clamped to the crossmember. The front cable comes from the foot mechanism and it's rear end is attached to a body mounted bracket. The equalizer goes on the rear end of the front cable after the bracket and connects to the ends of the drum cables that are hanging forward of the crossmember.

I don't suppose you could snap a picture for me, could you? I am mainly interested in the brackets. I might need to purchase some or something... Thanks for the info, either way!

    Here's what I have on my '74.

    Cross member attachment..

E-brake straps used the same bolt as the tank straps. I broke my straps so I used an improvised hooks.

Pardon my rust. It's almost embarrassing for me to show the underside of my jeep with all the restoration projects floating around here.

The parts book has a picture, but it does not show where the bracket mounts. There is one bracket (987135) that the front cable goes through and attaches to (ahead of the equalizer), and two clamps (921091, shown above) that hold the wheel cables to the center crossmember.

You should be able to use a cable clamp or a piece of plumber's tape for the rear clamps. They just keep the cables from dangling.

I can get you a picture and/or a scan later if you need it.

From the 74 parts book (I have it electronically on my hard drive):

I wish there was a more straightforward way to route them. The rear cables seem to about about a foot too long and loop unnecessary. Mine had been smashed against the frame by rocks or logs over the years and kinked to the point of being unusable.

You could put a foot pedal on both sides. Then each cable would run straight ahead to its pedal. Just have your passenger set their pedal when you set yours. :tea:

I expect the cables need that long, gradual bend becasue of the amount of force they transmit. Sharper bends and there would be binding.

I know what you mean about the cable loop...my frame has a little divot where the cable would constantly vibrate against it.

There isn't a whole lot of options with the routing with the length of cable they sell and the approach angle dictated on the backing plate. I replace mine and it still takes considerable pressure on the brake pedal to get enough hold to park the jeep on a hill.

Seems to me that if the front single cable were shorter and if you could mount the equalizer up a couple of feet these rear cables would have allot better functionality.

Until you put wider axles in, then the e-brake cables are just long enough.
