63 cj5 info!!

    Crawled underneath over the weekend wanted to see what kind of axles and tranny I got... CANT FIGURE THEM OUT.. front axle and rear axle have no visable markings like my military jeeps ( dana stamp)..These axles on the cj5 have NO drain plug on the bottom... Tranny is a 3 speed and is very tight.. reverse and 1st on the left and 2nd and 3rd on the right... This tranny has no markings either , when I say tight compared to my M38 (t90) there is a big shift difference as far as play goes... Any Help would be appreciated...

    If its original and got the F head I'm gonna say a t-90 tranny, d18 tcase, D27 front axle and d44 rear. But any of that stuff could have been swapped out by bubba over the years

    Its original One owner 19001 original miles.. sat in a barn for the last 40 years... brought it home points battery little automatic transmission fluid in the spark plugs.. it started up needs carb tuned up BODY paint and LOOK OUT GIRLS .. OLD MAN IN OLD JEEP ..Thanks for the info .. I will have to do some research on the axles and tranny specs.. UNFAMILIAR with cjs.. Only restored military JEEPS... This cj5 is my first go around...Thanks for the info..

    The axles will be marked in the webbing at the diff.

    Pics will help us alot...

    What are your plans for this Jeep?

    You should take Hippo up on his offer to check out your rig, if you are near Charlotte... :)

    You should have the same basic drivetrain in the CJ as the M38, with the exception as mentioned the Dana 27 in the CJ, 25 in the M38.

    PICTURE ARE COMING SOON... I have a 52 M38A1 that I have been working on for a year... Just picked up CJ because PRICE was right.. Also I am at the finishing touches on my 51 M38.. I hate too start a 3rd project at this time.. NO MORE room in garage..I monkey with the cj when I have to wait on parts or paint to dry on the other two...

    For what it is worth ( info ) I did some grease removal on my axles and tranny ... Front axle appears to be a DANA 30
    REAR axle appears to be a DANA 44
    STILL CANNOT FIND ANY MARKINGS ON TRANNY OR TRANSFER CASE
    ANY SUGGESTIONS... I dont believe it is a t-90 just by the way it shifts compared to my M series...

    Sometimes I've found the # cast into the very top portion of the pumpkin casting instead of the bottom right support web. Don't know why but there it is.
    Is your front axle a closed knuckle or open knuckle? If closed then it should be a 25 or 27 as the CJ's didn't use a closed knuckle 30. The Dana 30 wasn't used in a CJ until '72 when they introduced the open knuckle 30 with 11" drum brakes along with the longer wheel base and AMC motors. Normally you can tell a 27 from a 25 by the location of the vent. If in the diff cover then it should be a 25. If in the pumpkin then it should be a 27.Nickmil.
