    Hello,

My father and I are working on a 1955 CJ5. We have a new factory wiring harness and I'm trying to rewire the whole Jeep. I am now stuck - will someone please help!!! I searched the forums, but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

The diagram that came with the harness shows how to wire a generator, but we have installed a one-wire alternator with an internal regulator. Since I don't have a diagram for this, I'm lost.

I need to figure out how to wire the following. I don't know which wires to use from the harness and which wires I have to add.

    Coil
    Balast Resistor
    Starter Solenoid
    Starter

I have capped the wires for the voltage regulator.

A search at this site should have pointed you to this place:

There are plenty of wiring diagrams on the web that show how to connect a one-wire alternator. You may not find exactly your application, but this kind of modification is similar among many types of vehicles.

Part of the fun of having an old Jeep is learning how it works and how to make it better. You are making a great first step in that direction by updating the wire harness and charging system on your Jeep. You would probably benefit from having a factory wiring diagram for your vehicle that was published by Jeep. Your included sketch is rough and might be hard to follow. Here's one at this site that's free of charge!

    Good Luck.

That is a right handy diagram, even if you don't have 4-Way Slashers!

Problem #1- if it's a factory spec harness for '55 there was no solenoid, there was a floor mounted starter switch that handled the starter current directly. easy enough to add a solenoid if you have an ignition switch with an actual "start" position.
