I recently bought a 225 V6 from a member here. Very nice engine. I am wondering if anyone can provide a date of manufacture from the following data:

In the valley about the bell housing shirt at the rear of the engine: 991506 below that: 15 . FO 4 and an H. Clocked at six o'clock on the casting.

Front of the block just below the head is a faint number: 22459

Went to the team Buick site and found some data... the H probably stands for a standard configuration 225. There is little or no Jeep v^ data on the site.

I assume that this engine is from a Jeep.

    Any help appreciated.

    Mike

Are you sure that Block number is not a "991503"???

Also on the passengers side R/S bank on the block but between the scallop in the cylinder head there is the second codes stamped into the block where the cylinder head bolts on...........because of dirt and how unlikely the spot is it's hard to pick out.........sometimes a little sand paper in that area may reveal the number or letters.............Motor could be from any Buick or Willys vehicle during that time .................hope that helps!

The remainder of this reference is written and compiled by Jamie Carter and maintained by the Early CJ-5 Page.
    225 Intake casting numbers:

    ________________________________________
    225 V-6 engine id codes: Buick special 64-67 (1 and 2 bbl.)
    • 1964 = KH [between branches of right exhaust manifold]
    • 1965 = LH [engine number on the right front face of the crankcase, just below cylinder head]
    • 1966 = MH [as '65 above]
    • 1967 = NH [as '65 above]
...so the codes are either on the side or front of the block just under the cylinder head.
(I have heard rumors of a few engines produced in '63).
All are listed as 9.0-1 comp. ratio.
The engine codes seem to indicate that the first letter is the engine year, while the second letter is the comp ratio (9.0-1). The two letters together identify this engine as a 225 V-6, as the same year letter was used by Buick for all engine types '64-'71 (v-6, v-8) but the second comp ratio code letter varied between different engine types with the same comp ratio (i.e., a '64 V-6 comp ratio 9.0-1 is a "KH", while a '64 300 V-8 comp ratio 9.0-1 is a "KL").

Tarry99 -- Thanks! I now know a lot more than I did just a minute ago. I could not find a reference to serial numbers on this site, and I looked. Looked in the wrong places obviously.

    Thanks again,

    Mike

hi everyone, my engine code has a K N H which I think is for 1967, but what is the K for? Also does anyone have any spare rockers they would like to sell as I have one with a crack on the socket end. its the 1192964 stamped one or GM part 1194142 Has anyone purchased a rebuild kit from Northern Auto before and had good luck with that. Thanks Craig

Not sure about the "K" as it is not listed in the engine codes as a valid 1st letter on the list I use. N=1967 and H=V6-225 9.0 To 1 C.R. (2 BbI. Carb.)

Are you absolutely sure it is a K?
Does it look like maybe it could have been restamped?
My Mar of 1971 has DUH 002 R stamping = D Domestic, U can only speculate late 71 or early 72, H V6-225 9.0 To 1 C.R. (2 BbI. Carb.) and R Short block, (was replaced at sometime early in its life most likely under warranty).

And as everyone well knows, take the Jeep stuff with a grain of salt. Hoping someone on here with more knowledge than me will chime in, but here is the break down for everyone.

The Engine Code consists of three groups of digits with either alphabetic or numeric characters and may be interpreted as follows:
    FIRST DIGIT / Market
    M - Military
    E - Export
    D - Domestic
    I - Industrial

    SECOND DIGIT Year
    “*” - F4 -134
    L - 1965 V6-225
    M - 1966 V6-225
    N - 1967 V6-225
    P - 1968 V6-225
    R - 1969 F4-134 and V6-225
    S - 1970 F4-134 and V6-225
    T - 1971 F4-134 and V6-225
“*” Prior to 1967 all F4-134 engine codes were marked 4J plus serial number

    THIRD DIGIT Engine
    F - F4-134
    H - V6-225 9.0 To 1 C.R. (2 BbI. Carb.)
    Y – V6-225 9.0 To 1 C.R. MARINE (Low Profile) (2 Bbl. Carb.)
    Z - V6-225 9.0 To 1 C.R. MARINE (High Profile)(2 Bbl. Carb.)
    K - V6-225 7.6 To 1 C.R. (2 Bbl. Carb.)
    K - V6-225 7.4 To 1 C.R. (2 Bbl. Carb.)

FOURTH thru SIXTH DIGIT Day of Year Built, plus Change if any

SEVENTH DIGIT / Undersize Crank and Rod Bearings .010 oversize / A
    / Bores – Pistons .010 Oversize / B
    / Main Bearings .010 undersize F4-134 only / M
    / Connecting Rod Bearings .010 undersize F4-134 only / P

Seventh digit shown only if applicable to other than standard.

SEVENTH and EIGHTH DIGIT .010 undersize Crankshaft Main and Connecting Rod Bearings and with .010 oversize
    Bores in Cylinder Block AB
Seventh and eight digit shown only if applicable to other than standard.

    NINTH DIGIT /
    Service Engine / “S”
    Or
    Short Block “R”

TENTH and ELEVENTH DIGIT / Compression Ratio F4-134 only
    / 60 - 6.0 to 1
    / 63 - 6.3 to 1
    / 67 - 6.7 to 1
    / 71 - 7.1 to 1

The K could stand for Kaiser. My 66 Tux W/Original engine has the K N H stamp

My dauntless has KNH 539 stamped on it. From this last comment from Walt and others, I got the first 3 letters, but how to decode the second 3? I understand it should be the day of the year, but obviously 539 does not work for a calendar year. What are the codes for possible “changes” which would have been marked? Or does anyone know what these numbers represent? Thanks!
