3.1L diesel 192 CI

    Does anyone know anything about the 3.1L diesel motor they put into the 1968 CJ5? Such as who made them? If they were any good? Where one could be found? Etc.
    Just curious.

    Wasn't such a beast in '68.

    Just the F134 and Dauntless V6 at that point. The Perkins diesel experiment was discontinued in '65 and it was only 192 CI.

    Oh, I saw the engine listed under '68 in an online parts catalog. What was this Perkins diesel exp.?

    I was just teasing when I called it an experiment.

    The Perkins was offered from '61 to '65 in CJ-5 and CJ-6 models respectively.

    Huh...Dutch was a '66 and Perkins....'66 dealer brochure showed the Perkins option as well.

    I realize this is a really old thread, but my Perkins CJ-6 is also registered/titled as a 66 model. Figured for someone searching for what little info is out there on the Perkins it may be a help or reassurance they do exist after 65.

    Maybe titled the year it was sold?

    Built in 1965 for example but not sold off the dealer lot until 1966?

    No way to verify this but was told by the previous owner it was bought from Canada. So it could be leftover 65 titled/registered as 66 or export and truly a 66. Who knows.

    Wouldn't the serial number nail it down in terms of what year it was built? May help to clarify the info a bit. Serial number may prove a 1965 production date JEEP that was sold in '66, as suggested.

    I'd be happy to try to decipher it down to the year, but the way they were numbered and how records were kept i'm not sure that's possible. Any suggestions? I browsed the old VIN thread but it appears the pdf link at the beginning is not functional.

    According to an old serial number document I found online, my particular CJ-6 was the 9th Perkins built in December of 65 out of 24 built that month....It was a good month for Perkins production. Production ended June of 67 at 575 built of the CJ-6 model and 1146 of the CJ-5's built.

    I have numerous Jeeps & a few old Land Rovers - a couple of comments - the Perkins Diesel is a very common diesel engine around the world - the British Perkins Company's engines were oem in Massey Fergeson tractors & some Oliver Tractors - the were also installed in Land Rover Series vehicles as an aftermarket re-power. The 192 in the Jeep is very similar to the 4 cylinder diesel found in the Massey 150 farm tractor. Also I own a Land Rover Series IIa NAS 88" diesel - the serial number says its a 1965 model however it is titled as a 1967 - again it must have sat on the importers lot for a couple of years - you must remember that gasoline was less than $0.30 a gallon in the mid sixties and diesels were slow & smokey - not a lot of demand in the USA. Also if you look at Jeep Corporation's marketing, I think you will find that the CJ-6 model & the diesel engine option were built to compete with Land Rover on the underdeveloped third world market.
