I haven't found an owners manual. I think we are going to strike out on that item. :n: I'll snap dash pics tomorrow.

She runs now actually. We just pulled the radiator while were are replacing the radiator hoses. We wanted some room to clean the hose nipple on the water pump for the lower radiator hose. Needed to get some rust and scale off.

The washer pump is missing under the dash but judging of what I've seen I'd say it was vacuum operated.

No, definitely not. It's an aftermarket fiberglass flexible fan. Originally you had a steel blade fan with a fan clutch. Standard cooling was four blades and HDC was seven.

Even in 1972?? If it's supposed to have a clutch and a steel fan I'll replace it.

The flex fans are an aftermarket invention, mostly a hot-rod thing. They flatten out as engine speed increases, so there is a lot of air flow at low speed and less drag at high speed. Your Jeep definitely came with a conventional steel fan. As a Renegade in '72, not certain but I would expect HDC was part of the package. You need a seven blade fan, fan clutch and fan shroud for HDC. My '74 book shows a 994277 and 998761 for the fan and tempatrol (fan clutch) resp. These numbers well predate 1974; no reason to think a '72 is different. Fan shroud should be a 999305, also a pre-74 number. The book has a mistake here, calling for a 5355678 (WHT and WMT reversed).

More thoughts - IF your Jeep has standard cooling from the factory, it would have had a 4-blade steel fan and a 1 7/8" spacer, 998760 and 3187213 resp. If that spacer is the right length, I would guess that the PO replaced the origina fixed steel fan with this flex fan. This is odd, because the Renegade was usually sold fully optioned, and that included HDC, HD alternator, etc. Who would chose standard cooling in Las Vegas? Anyway, I'd expect you can buy a new tempatrol, and the shroud is available aftermarket as I recall. Jeep used that fan for all the V8s with HDC, '71-79, so you should be able to find a used one on the Wagoneer forums if not aftermarket.

If you want to put it back to the 4-blade fan (factory trim LHDC) it was used on all the V8s through '77, when LHDC seems to disappear for the V8 wagons and J-trucks. Or you could find one from a CJ through '80 and maybe later.

Thanks. Definitely not going to do standard cooling on an old v8 in Vegas. I'll located a steel fan and a clutch. Thanks for the info!

I looked up that part number and crown automotive makes a replacement fan but pictures show it as a 6 blade.

In general, I always take any claim made by Crown/Omix-Ada/Dorman as to cross-reference or technical accuracy with a huge grain of salt.

Anyone want to recommend a good fan replacement please do. Considering the fiberglass flex fan is so old we are going to retire it. Hate for it to come apart in a hot Vegas summer.
