The heads and valve sizes are far from amazing and it's just not that big of a motor to start with. I would guess very low 200s is the most you could reasonably expect with higher compression, cam, port cleanup, 4bbl, headers. As you are finding out, none of it will be cheap since it's far from mainstream stuff these days. All of that will come at the expense of low-end torque which is were these engines really shine.

In these short wheelbase, squirly Jeeps, the stock 160hp seems to be plenty. It lets you cruise down the highway at 60-70mph and you have great off idle torque for offroading. In stock form, you can lug them down to 400rpm without killing the engine.

That said, I do like my '71 with a Buick 350 in it. It doesn't make a ton of power either but, man, that thing has gobs of torque off idle. I've got 3.73s with an overdrive in that Jeep and it happily idles down the highway at 1800rpm when doing 60mph. It's still overkill for these old Jeeps though.

I would guess around 180 horsepowers. Not much bang for the bucks. Did a run today with the secondaries wired shut.
No noticeable loss of power though I have the black spring on the vacuum secondaries. Still tuning the primary circuit.
Horsepower can be made with higher compression and a more radical cam. Everything then becomes a compromise.

Not much bang for the buck at all. If you can wire the primaries closed and not feel a difference I would venture to say that the demand for the secondaries is just not there.

I know getting more up top is usually going to compromise what you get at the bottom. That's why I made a my comment about keeping it a street/ mild off road combo. I guess I keep and clean up what I have at this point and learn to work with it.

It's certainly a good stating point. Then you can figure out what you like and don't like about it.

I’m sure a fellow member lives near enough to you that you could take a ride in their v6 powered jeep to feel what these are like without any mods at all. They basically have all the power you’d want in the platform they’re in. 160hp and gobs of torque in what is basically a 2800# farm tractor is all that you’ll really want without doing some major axle/suspension/frame redesigning in order to keep it on the road. They’re sketchy at best.

I’ll repeat what has been said before. Get it running and driving first, *then* decide what direction you want to take it. I’d hate to see you make a race car out of it, only to take your first drive and be appalled by their quirks and poor road manners.

With the black spring on such a small engine they're prubably not opening anyway.

I get what you are saying. I was also kind of thinking do it once. I have spent a lot of money in the past trying to get projects on the road to be disappointed and redo things to make it the way I want it.

I will admit though some of the most evil handling with too much power vehicles are some of funnest toys I've owned.

231 intake would be easier to find . don't know
this engine has been on stand for 20 or more years ( spare ) . I'll get to it someday
my 225 has the 2 bbl and works just fine . did for awhile run a TH350 behind it for a few years
    0 - 60 you'll never shift that fast

I was under the impression the 231 didn't fit. I guess thats my biggest issue is knowing what is interchangeable. I guess the early 231 was odd fire for a short time?

I have no idea on this one. Has offenhouser cast in and 360 on each side. Don't see a part number. Got it from a member here and decided not to use it.

That is correct. I was doing a test and tune run. I haven't gotten to the point checking to see if and when the secondaries open.

Looks to be the Ofy-5713 dual plane manifold. There seems to be some welding done to the bottom. Not sure if that is from the factory. The number is the casting date.

The 231 will up to mid '77 will work. The EGR will need to be blocked. I am curious about that Holley carb. Maybe an economizer? Yes it is.

Same manifold I’m running. If your looking for the Offy manifold, this should work well with a 390 Holley. They work well and deliver decent economy if you stay out of the secondaries.

Terminated just posted the manifold that you are looking for.

It will work with a 2bbl or 4bbl carb.
I have a Motorcraft 2150 2bbl that I removed from v6 that was running very well, $50 and the carb is yours.

Terminated bought that from me and I have no idea on the age or the weld. It came out of Southern Cali originally so i'm not sure what happened to it. I was cleaning house and that was one of the things I let go .

the 231 intakes will fit but there will be a small step where the port sizes are a little different. My cam is a Comp Cams. around 484 lift but a lot of duration. I have in the past ran an Offy intake but with the current build, I have 2 Offys, 1 Holly Street Dominator and a Edelbrock to choose from. In the past I have also used the stock 2Barrel intake with a 500 Holley on it and ran great. Brennan's Garage has a great adapter for this application. Sal Walter is doing Webers for these engines now and while I have no experience with them I guess they work great with his tune in them. That may end up being an option also that I look into. IF so, I guess Ill have a bunch of wall hangers in the shop of all the aluminum intakes.

So far I've sent 2 private messages and haven't heard anything back. If anyone has a 4 barrel manifold for sale and willing to ship (unless local) please send me a message.
