1971 Only Additional Front Bump Stops?

Good morning everyone. Does the 1971 frame have additional front bump stops from the factory? My my 69 frame does not have them but my 71 does. I first thought that they were added on by the PO until I saw the frame below listed by another member here.

My 71 has factory 12 leaf springs on the front in case that has something to do with it. I am also noting that my 71 has the factory frame plating on the forward frame horns whereas the pic below (also a 71) does not?

Please educate me as these are not shown in the parts manual (R2 or R3) under the frame diagrams. See red arrow below.

 

Like you, my 71 has these bump stops and my 69 doesn't. Both are V6 Jeeps. Instead, the 69 has the torque arm stop on the right side. My guess is these rear mounted bump stops on the 71 perform the same roll of keeping the driveshaft from contacting the starter. Must have been cheaper to make.

 

If I recall, my '72 intermediate (years ago) had those same spring stops.

Does anyone know why? I cannot for the life of me see how you would ever engage the normal small stops having these on? So why would the small ones even be installed?

 

back when my spring were stock and flat from age
I could see the frame/ spring stoppers working
with a newer set of 2 1/2 lift springs . no way it would ever hit the stops
as it was posted . I think it was more to keep drive shaft from hitting starter

Very interesting.... Was there something about the 71 frames that required it, or just a frame evolution thing. I am still wondering as to why they are not in the frame diagrams for the R2 or R3 parts books?
Obviously I will leave them on... Just could not figure out as to why they where there and on both sides. So clearly something Jeep felt was necessary and started in 71 or somewhere there about.

My 68 has the arm coming off of the axle and the riveted bump stop on the outside of the passenger side frame. What was interesting is that this 71 frame pictured had the same upper bump stop for the earlier style on the outside (I removed it to replace the one on my 68) but did not have the arm coming off the axle. It may have been put on there from the factory as they exhausted their supply of axles with the arm coming off. Then eventually they all came with the two bump stops in between the frame and the springs.

Thank you for the link ITLKSEZ. I still have not seen anything that is definitive other than people speculating that it is to keep the drive line from getting all Biden with the starter.

Ok, so it's the little extension with the bumper. Curious, my 71 27A axle does not have the arm but has the riveted stop. Jeep sure did some weird stuff in the day, or I guess that the PO could have removed the torque arm, however I cannot find any evidence on my axle that it was ever there.

 

In the end I guess it is really inconsequential. The riveted outrigger for the torque arm on my Mar of 71 build must be a carry over? Although it really does not make any sense as to why they would still put it on the frame when it is not being used and 70 was the last year for it.

I believe the torque arm on that mates with the extension on the axle is specifically there to keep the starter from getting bashed by the driveshaft.
The pair of spring bump stops are there to limit the compession of the front springs. My '72 CJ5 that had these bump stops had springs that were virtually flat, no arch. That Jeep sat with only about an inch or less of clearance between the spring and the rubber bumper on the bump stop. At one point, I fully compressed and chained down my suspension on that Jeep to autocross it. The springs were mashed flat, or beyond, and the fronts were solid against these bump stops. I still had some clearance between the engine and front axle, but not much.
