My cj has manual locking hubs on the front. If I put it in 4 wheel low range and do not lock the hubs will this mean that I am actually in low range 2 wheel drive and can damage the rear wheel drivetrain. my cj is a 1970 with v6 and a dana 44 rear axle

You are still in 4 wheel drive as power is still transmitted through the front end, there is just no drive in the front as it has been disconnected at the wheels (hubs). You should take care though, I.e. Don't pop the clutch in low range, etc. Due to the gear reduction

Like many others here I’ve removed the interlock pill on a twin stick Dana 18 so I can use the low range in 2WD and it’s been very handy. I’ve even used it on pavement to move trailers around, drag downed trees out of the way.
Like the guys said, don’t drive it like like you stole it and your driveline should be fine.
