Frame Paint

    Hey All-

    I know many of you use POR on your frames and such, but I have a question...

    my frame is already primed (and painted in some areas... experiments)... i know POR has to be applied on bare metal but I dont want to strip it down again...

    is there something that works close to as well as a final coat?

    all i have on there now is some RustOleum (maybe its Krylon)... i ll strip it if i HAVE to, but just dont WANT to if i can get a good product... either rattle-can or brush is fine...

    POR will adhere to paint as long as it's clean. Are you interested in it as a sealer? Make sure you use two coats, the first *will* have pinholes it applied with ta brush. I don't recommend it as a top coat.

    I would like to use it as a sealer IF i can do it WITHOUT stripping the frame back down...

    since you have stated that it can be used as a sealer OVER clean paint, then what would you suggest as a top-coat?

    any suggestions on what to apply INSIDE the hat channels?

    Absolutely anything *EXCEPT* their "Chassis Black" top coat, that stuff is a sin against paint :(. Just make sure you get it on at the right time, best is when the POR has setup somewheres between "post it note sticky" and "kinda drags on the finger tip". They say you have 24 hours to top coat but I wouldn't wait that long.


    Not really because there's no way to clean the rust/ dirt/mud/dead mice out of them. best i can thing of is shoot some old oil in there a couple times a year.

    i have hear that if you take the nozzle with a long tube off a wd40 or brake cleaner can you can put the nozzle on a paint can and spray into tight spaces a can will not reach. just remember to spray into a trash can or someting to get the wd40 out of the tube first.

    i have heard that as well, youll just have to switch the nozzles over... as the rattle cans dont have the recess for the straw...

    maybe i ll try that this weekend

    I used Por with a cheep garden sprayer, it seemed to work real nice but the sprayer is only good for one time. Had to use news paper under job to keep excess off my floor. I also used chassis black top coat, I'm wondering what the problem with it is?

    now THAT sounds like a great idea!

    ordered a qt of the stuff this AM... from what i have read here, looks like it should be enough for 2 coats...

    i think i ll try that garden sprayer route... one of those hand pump pressure types right?

    i want a frame in a color OTHER than black, so i will most likely use RustOleum for the topcoat...

    i ll let yall know how it comes out

    Comes in colors and various textures as well.. One coat.. It's been on my jeep frame now for over 15 years and not a single issue.

    May I offer some experienced suggestions here?? I am an automotive restorer. Like many people, I have tried POR. In my experiences, it is not a material to use as the company suggests. There is a much better material out there. It is Master Series. It is similar in chemistry to POR as it is a moisture cured urethane. However, it is a primer. It is intended to be top coated. It has aluminum particle that leaf together creating a moisture proof layer. It also can be applied directly to clean unrusted steel, unlike POR. I have been using this for about 15 years now, it is far superior. It doesn't peel as POR does. If you like POR as a final look, then use it on top of Master Series. Or, the Master Series company offers products just like POR and even top coats that are better IMO. Many times, I will cover Master Series with epoxy primer and then finish as normal for automotive paint. I have never, but some will primer an entire car in Master Series, followed by an automotive primer and paint. I have used Master Series in some extreme circumstances in my business and have always been very pleased. I do not work for Master Series, I'm just a very satisfied customer. Everyone I have turned onto Master Series has felt the same. Give it a try.
