As always, it is your JEEP, you are free to do with it what you will.
That being said, it has been that way for more than 50 years, do you really plan to drive it year round in bad weather?
Perhaps you could have some matching side curtains made to go with the top you have, when you re-stripe it.
The factory heater is less than marginal at best. Search and you should find several better choices if you choose to go that way.

 

The factory heater is sometimes called the "placebo heater." Search for "mojave heater" and you'll get lots of threads to look at.

Up to you on the top. Realize that soft tops aren't cheap, but they likely add as much to the value of your Jeep as they cost. You can take off the doors and roll up the back and side curtains to get a configuration like the surrey top you have. All-weather capability is a good thing, IMO.

 

A heater would be to get my wife on-board, and if you saw my wife, you'd understand how the value increase is applied! I like the idea of a soft top rolled up, best of both worlds! And yes I will drive it year round, I don't need a heater!
