Thanks for accepting me to your Forum! I look forward to sharing and learning more about my Jeep and making new friends with the same interest. I have my Grandfathers 1960 Willys Jeep which I was always told was a Surrey. It is all original, I am in the process of restoration and wonder if anyone knows if my Jeep is truly considered a Surrey or just a Pink Jeep! It had the striped top originally but was replaced with a solid canvas but still had the fringe. ( I remember my Grandfather having it made) I will post photos shortly.

Hard to tell without the photos but based on your avatar pic it looks like it is four wheel drive. I believe all Surreys were 2wd.

I understand that. My thought is that a dealership took a Pink CJ5 and added the top to look like the original Surrey. I have a couple photos from the early 70's I will dig up. It is still a gem to me as I remember riding with my Grandfather 40 years ago in this Jeep. I have the original "Pink Slip" and every registration from 1960-1985.

I believe the Surrey was only the DJ-3A, not any other model. Jeep had a factory paint color called "Indian Coral" that is a shade of pink, especially when it's sun-bleached and oxidized. I suspect you have that color and a fringed top. Still pretty neat that it's original.

Here are lots of pictures of Surreys - http://www.google.com/search?q=jeep...&ei=o0e5TtizPJCgtwfs_cCxBw&sqi=2&ved=0CFYQsAQ - notice that they were 2WD, had matching upholstery, matching steering wheel color, and only came in the earlier flat-fendered body style. Surreys were intended as country-club taxis, and similar uses. There are a couple of Surreys amongst the members here - maybe They'll post up some pictures.

I am aware of the DJ-3A, and have seen the photos and info. I am guessing I may have the only Original Pink CJ-5 out there. I have never seen another one.

If your Jeep has bow pockets, that DJ top could be installed on it. I suspect it was added at the dealer, if your Jeep is 4WD.

Here are the colors for 1960: http://www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/Paint2.html - it shows "Coral Mist" which is pinkish. There are also some pictures of the paint and trim tag, which may be present. "Indian Ceramic" (not Indian Coral - oops) may be only for the CJ-5A and CJ-6A Tuxedo Park models.

This photo was taken in 1990, The top was the replacement top that was installed 15 or so years prior. I will find the original photo and post when I can. Where would I find the paint codes on my Jeep?

If I'm not mistaken, the whole idea behind the Surrey's came out because the USPS cancelled a huge order of mail Jeeps and Kaiser was stuck with all these 2wd DJ-3A's. It was hard to sell a 2wd jeep alone, so they painted them pink and blue, etc, added chrome, etc and marketed them to vacation resorts to shuttle guests to their rooms. Kind of an early version of what golf carts do today at resorts

Yeah but us DJ folk like to think our DJ's are LOT faster and way COOLER than a golf cart. Here's one of mine..No it isn't quite stock...

It is however a lot closer to being driveable than my Surrey.

On the CJ5 surrey, does it have and special order tags on the firewall??

Oh, it is.....it's a Jeep! Jeeps have worn many hats over the years; a golf cart is just one of them. If you think about just today, how many different vehicles are doing what just a jeep has done in the past. Golf carts, atv's, utv's, Hummvees, tractors, delivery trucks, taxi's, airport tugs........

This one looks like pictures I have seen of 'Nellie Belle' from the Roy Rogers tv show.

Oh, no need to apologize! :) I looked on TCP Global, but did not look the Willys sheets. Without the paint/trim tag, all you can do is try to match the existing color with the color sheets. If you were really uncertain and needed to know, you could order a pint or a spray can of each color, and make some test patches. Your local auto paint store, or one of the online vendors, can mix some paint for you. Here's one possible source - http://www.autopaintdirect.com/ - there are others.

From your one picture, it looks more like Coral Mist ... somehow I think Tropical Rose is more intense than what I see in the picture.

I agree with Tim, I think it was originally Coral Mist. You might try to find areas of original paint that haven't faded as much like behind the glove box door or up under the dash to get a better idea of the original color.

I think the best guess is that it was an original Coral Mist Jeep that may have had a dealer-installed Surrey top on it. But the beauty is that you have an original CJ with a known history even if it wasn't a Surrey.

Guys, I so appreciate all the info on my Baby! My Grandfather meant the World to me and as I work on her to get her back I feel him there watching over us. I will continue to share the process and post more photos as I find them! Besides calling her "Baby Jeepy" his other nickname was "hijo de la playa" Tranlation: "Son of the Beach"

.....and the story continues! I just got off the telephone with the original owner of my Willys Jeep. He is in his 84th year. (It cost me $9.95 to do the background check.) He bought the Pink Jeep for his wife in Hollywood in 1960, took it home to Brawley, CA (my home town) and had the frame fabricated and top made! When he separated from his wife that year, she got the Jeep, he got the airplane, and my Grandfather bought the Jeep from her! So the top is an add-on. My question to you all, do I remove the top and frame and go with an original full soft top, since I no longer live in a desert environment? I would consider adding a heater as well so I could enjoy it year round. Love to here your comments!
