i am tired of sky high prices for ill fitting tops that dont come in the color i want anyway.
    i already have a steel 1/2 cab
but i want a safari top for the slug.
i am going to use white canvas
and make my own bows for the rear and side sockets.
i am going to use the leading edge that is on a bikini top to mount my safari on the slugs windshield channel.
also i am going to try using my saddle sewer awl for this project.
does anybody have pictures of the edges of these kind of tops?
a shot of the rear would be nice as well.
    thanks fellas!

Sounds like a good project Bill! I don't have anything helpful for ya, but I was thinking of doing something similar so I look forward to seeing your results. I would think that sunbrella would be a decent fabric to use on this project and it comes in a ridiculous amount of colors R)

I THINK I AM GONNA JUST USE SOME CONDUIT OR SOMETHING FOR THE TUBING
AND THE CLOTH IS JUST A RECTANGLE.
    famous last words.

This is going to be awesome. I will be glued to this thread. I want a top in brown for my CJ6, but no one makes it, so I am looking forward to what you can come up with!

There is a guy over on the 2A page that has put up a thread over there on how to make your own top.....Look for a thread started by JPET...I'm sure lots of the info will apply. And yes, Sunbrella is the stuff to use.

my slug has 4 sockets for poles to fit into
    1 right behind each seat
and 1 at each rear corner
so i am thinking 2 U shaped things and a pole running down the center from windshield to back edge.
oh yeah and 1 on each edge
maybe i am just fooling myself (again)
but this looks really simple to do.

    http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/make-your-own-canvas-top_topic10355.html

This is a how to on a two piece half top/full top but has lots of good info. This is the same guy who reverse engineered the 2A/3A bows and supplied topbows.com with the tooling to manufacture new bows. (BTW the DJ Safari top uses the same bow setup as a 3A.....except it has those silly little panels above each wheel added.) Many guys have made their own bows using conduit and a tubing bender... The swaged ends to get the bows to fit together are a little harder to make but not impossible, or you could fab a connector sleeve. I will link the topbow fabrication thread as well for you in a little while once I find it again.

THis is a how to by the same guy on a much simpler top that is more like the safari style top... all you have to do is add some fringe and you are all set. :)

This page http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/bikini-tops-photos_topic8335_page16.html?KW=top+bows has a simple bikini top plan...

Unfortunately the thread on top bows seems to be missing...
