1972 CJ 232ci. Looking at photos of similar CJ's I have yet to see a spare tire bracket like that pictured here. In fact, I am not sure how to re-use this vertical
black bracket nearest the corner of the quarterpanel. I assume it provided a swing-out type mount. Secondly, what other parts do you see that I would need to rebuild the spare tire mount? PO must have ripped the original up against a tree or something tearing it off. Thanks and much more to come.

You'll need to host the picture somewhere that's accessible to the net, like PhotoBucket. I think there's thread here somewhere about posting pictures.

My Jeep had a mount just like that. I think it was one of the early aftermarket swing out tire carriers (Kayline, maybe?). It appears to be the same as the version used on the Renegade I. You are missing the actual tire carrier part, which was a U-shaped deal that bolted to the hinges on the right. I sold my mount to a member on here a while back.

EDIT: It was Whitco and there are good pics of the complete carrier in this thread: http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/show...carrier&highlight=renegade+spare+tire+carrier

Yep, Whitco. "Jeep Approved" special equipment, available through the Jeep parts depot. You are missing the U-shaped piece of round tubing that swings away, and holds the tire. No great loss, IMO. If you want a swing-away tire rack, I suggest you get one of the modern designs that mounts to the frame and rear cross-member, rather than to the body.

Thanks guys. I have to say that I am surprised to learn that this carrier, i.) carries the weight of the spare while mounted only to the body and ii.) is not the cause of the damage to the side of my vehicle! With that said, I ask this. What kind of spare tire carrier is it that mounts the wheel to the side of the body? I prefer that vintage look and hope to cover up my future body repair work. Again, point me to the other authentic option.

Here's a view of the carrier on my 72. It's different than your's but was an "official" Jeep dealer option. I'm not sure of when it was added to the Jeep. I too had some damage on the side where the spare was originally carried. The picture shows (not too clearly) in the circle the mount that is used on the side and on the rear carrier. You can buy these after market for about $25? When I do my body work (someday) I'm going to put the spare back on the side for that retro look.

There's also a light/reflector that mounts in the center - we had a thread about the reflector a while back.

The three bolt heads (carriage style rounded heads) and the fourth hole is where the factory side mounted carrier mounted. The hole you have is due to rust out from the inside. There is a support inside the quarter panel that had oak inside and it was common for them to rust this way. You will need to repair the quarter panel and support before even thinking of mounting the spare there. I've seen tons of Jeeps rusted just exactly like yours. My '59-5 is the same and my '59-6 was too. It was starting on the daughter's '70, and the '68 I had was starting in the same place.

I am simply blown away and most thankful! I did enjoy the visual though of the CJ ripping across a forest trail only to get clipped by a Missouri Oak! You fellas have clearly understood my problem and presented clear explanations and very wise solutions. I will not let you down. Did I mention the CJ has only 10,000 farm miles on it? It has never seen asphalt...if I have me way it will!

Alex, this CJ's home is not too far from you in Salem. We are off 32 near 21. It will be in St. Louis over the winter for body work, but busting to get home by Spring.

Cool! I didn't notice your location. I'm about 15 miles South of Steelville, not in Salem proper. I'm finding several other Jeepers in the area, as well, so I'm thinking a rondesvous is in order next summer. :)

Thanks for the brochure DREDnot. Given the fact that I have both sides of the mount in place, I will attempt to first, locate a salvage rack and wheel mount, but in the worst case, having the schematic allows us to reproduce the hardware and use the original mounts. The swingout mount is growing on me especially given the fact that it is halfway in place.

Thanks again all....count on seeing more photos and keeping abreast of my restoration.

    Regards.
