Sounds like your float is stuck. You might be able to adjust it, but it is probably easier to replace the whole sending unit.

it reads from F an down, just stops short of E. if im going to run out of gas i had rather run out on E not quarter or maybe eighth. my previous jeep gauge would go past E before trouble. if i have to pull the tank then i will,i was hoping for a simpler fix like adjusting the gauge if possible.

I am more familiar with marine gas gauges, and they are adjusted at the sending unit and send an electrical signal to the gauge itself. I believe cars are the same way.

You can try a new sending unit, they're relatively cheap ($20-ish), but the aftermarket ones are notoriously crappy quality. If it works correctly otherwise I would just live with it and plan on filling up when it shows 1/4.

The electrical part of the sender can't be adjusted. But you can bend the float arm up and down so that you get full travel as the float moves.

There are also little metal tabs that stop the travel of the float arm. These can be adjusted a little to change the range of travel.

The sender has a spec - check the FSM for your year. Can't be more specific becasue you have not put your year/model/equipment in your message or in your signature. Test the sender against the spec with your multimeter to see if it's working properly. The FSM also has instructions for testing the gauge using fixed resistances. Make sure all your grounds are good.

All AMC era Jeep fuel sending units and gauges are 10 ohms full and 75-ish ohms empty. Same as Ford.

Good luck, if you can't live without perfection I suspect you'll find the aftermarket replacement units fail to meet your expectations.
