Transmission won't shift

Was driving this morning with the overdrive in low, down shift the floor three speed from third to second to make a left turn than shifted to third and nothing. There is no grinding just a spinning noise. It feels like it's stuck in neutral. Both drive lines are still there and if I engage the front axle I can see it turn if we push the Jeep. I can engage the three speed into R-1st 2nd or third let the clutch out still won't go. Called some friends with a trailer and got it home. Any ideas?

Perhaps the O.D. bowl gear fell off the mainshaft.

You shouldn't have to remove the transmission, but you would have to remove the OD. Removing the OD is not too big of a deal.

Got back from the shop where the Jeep is. The drivers side rear axle shaft sheared off. As long as it's there I'll just have both of them done.

Full float conversion? When that happens in stock configuration, you usually get passed by the rear wheel/tire-while you are very busy trying to keep the other 3 wheels in down position and on the road. LUCKY!!!! IF you had put it in 4x4, you should have been able to drive it home.

:? If the TC is in neutral you're not in either 2x4 or 4x4. Did you mean to say it was not in neutral?

Back in 1970 I had a MGA with knock off wheels, went around a tight corner near my home going about 30 mph heard what I thought was glass breaking ( that was the knock off hitting the payment) than the rear axle met the pavement and shaved the spline down as the tire went for a ride past me. I was OK but had some prayers to say as earlier I was driving back from Sacramento.

At this point I'm not sure, AZ sun gets to me when it's 114, but I'm sure your right. Just for grins when I get the Jeep back and driving on the street is 2x4 on the TC shifter straight back toward toward the seat?
    Thanks

If you have a single stick transfer case, the position fully forward is 2WD. If you have a twin stick, the one closer to the driver is the 2WD/4WD shifter-forward 2WD, back for 4WD.

I have four floor shifters, 3 speed forward, next is the OD shifter. So the third shifter is the 2wd/4wd? Does the fourth shifter from the driver have a neutral position? I appreciate all the info and help. My first Jeep and I know I'm getting some laughs out there with this questions but I'll ask anyway.
    Thanks again
    Happy July 4th.

    Yes, 4th shifter is
    Low - forward
    Neutral - middle
    High - rear

In middle (neutral) position you can shift the trans all you want, but you ain't going anywhere................

Thank you for the link on decals.
Would the following be correct to use 2wd driving?
Leave the transfer case in 2wd and the fourth shifter in either low or high 4wd?
Again thank you for your patience.

If it is built right and you aren't missing the little detent ball between the two shifters on the transfer case, In 2WD you can only shift that fourth shifter (the one to the far right as you sit in the drivers seat) into either hi or neutral. In 4WD that shifter will be Hi to the rear, then neutral, then lo to the front. The second from the right shifter is 2WD in the forward position, and 4WD in the rear position. I don't have the over drive, so I can't tell you on that one. And the books and owners manuals say you should be stopped to change either of the shifters on the transfer case. Hope this clears things up a little. Pete.

On the stickers, the vin one I have on the firewall in the engine bay is a Willys one. Different from the ones he has listed. Guess I will try real hard not to loose that one!
