I am about to start a wiring project for my jeep. I have the head lights Working but none of the following.
No brake lights or turn signals. (I'll post up pictures of her sometime this weekend.)
I'm looking for ideas of where to start. Or maybe how to systematically start.
I have an ohm meter but am not sure where to set it to test for 12V?
    Thanks for any info

An ohm meter is used to test resistance, or to test continuity------not to test voltage. That said, many of what folks call an "ohm meter" are really a VOM----voltage and ohm meters.

If you have one of these, set it to the voltage position, the lowest number that is over 12 v. Be sure to use the correct polarity when testing-----neg is ground.

If you have a straight ohm meter, get a test light at the FLAPS.

To do a systematic check of the various circuits, always start at the voltage source for that circuit. If you have voltage at the fuse block, that is a good place to start, then just follow each circuit out. Test both terminals of any switch, this is important.

Just a heads up, for these older vehicles, the culprit is often the ground at the end of the line.

    Good luck.

go to your local auto parts store and a cheap light tester. i have the same exact ride myself, and the wiring on these is so simple its crazy. get the book for that vehical or even online a few places if you google cj5 parts you'll find a site or two that will have the wiring diagrams. the other good thing about these jeeps are that everything is easily available online. worst case you need a new brake light switch and turn signal flasher, you'll still only be spending less than 50 bucks. good luck.

thanks Cj5lover--- The wiring diagram looks very simple. ( sometimes famous last words) Do you have one you might reommend? (wiring dia)

Not to contradict what Mike wrote, but the modern term is usually "multimeter." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimeter

A digital multimeter (DMM) won't care about polarity - it will show you a minus sign if you have the positive lead connected to (-). It will measure, at a minimum, AC or DC volts, resistance, and (small) DC current. You can get them with lots of additional features, but your basic cheap one will measure volts, ohms and amps.

You can get on from Sears or Amazon for less than $20... once you learn how to use them, they are very, very handy. IMO, skip the light tester and go direct to a DMM. Not much price difference, and a vastly more useful tool.

Guess I am just showing my age..........................

I do have one of the newer units, one nice feature is the tone setting, in case you are in a situation where it is hard to look at the meter, or test light.

Thanks for keeping me in the modern world----

Would that wiring diagram also be for a 1960 CJ-5 F134?
    Thank you.
