Is there such a thing as a lower gear set for the 20?

Yes, I installed a Terra Low Kit (3.15) in my dana 20, had to grind the inside of the case and a small portion of the shift rail to clear new gear. There are sites on the internet that show it being done. I like it, as I am no fan of Dana 18's.

You can get it cheaper through the dealer network. Like many companies they prefer you buy from their dealers so they mark up the price if you buy direct. You can also go 2.46-1 low range using 29 tooth model 18 gears and one Early Bronco T-shift transfer case gear. You still need to grind the inside of the case.

Hey Nick, have you done one of your great write-ups on this mod.......? It sounds like a nice alternative to the price tag of the 3to1 kit.

I second that. They are pretty proud of that teraflex set, so a better option budget wise would be nice.

Sorry guys. When I'm building this stuff it's for customers and I just don't have time to take pics and document it. JB Conversions is another option for the 3.15 kit. Anyway you look at it it's not cheap. If you get on the internet and search around there are a bunch of writeups on how to do the 2.46-1 conversion. One thing to watch out for is some of the writeups say to use the 18-8-58 Bronco slider gear. That is NOT right. Off-road.com is one of those. I've even had correspondence with them about the mistake, they agree the info is incorrect, but they still haven't changed it. That was back in 2001.

    The gears you need are:
    18-8-23 input
    18-8-22
    18-8-24
    18-5-9

and the hardest gear to find, from an early Bronco T-shift transfer case is:

    18-8-37 slider.

There is some grinding of the case for the slider clearance and in the pan rail to clear the intermediate gear for installation. You can use the pan gasket as a guide for that.

The tera-low kit is definitely available cheaper. I paid $900 for mine installed. It was worth it, huge improvement.
