Hello to all. I am new to the jeep world and have been lurking on ths site for a while, but I need some help.
I have just purchased a 69 DJ-5A, but after alot of research I have some questions. The jeep runs pretty good and the body is almost rust free. I do need to rewire the jeep but everything mechanical seems to be working very well. Now on to my question.
I have pulled the serial number off the body in three different locations (one on a tag on the dash, one on a sticker on the dash, and one off the fire wall). The serial number is 8513-58098. Which is a 9 digit number not the 10 digit number I expected. How do I decode the 9 digit number?
After more research I have found the numbers off the frame and motor. The frame number is 85437 which I believe is a serial number from 1961 CJ-3B, is this correct? The number off the motor is J213953 (may be a 4 in front of the "J" I need to check tonight). I believe the motor was built in 1959 which I could see where that would almost corrospond to the 1961 frame. Am I correct with this?
The last question I have is will a 1969 DJ-5A body fit onto a 1961 frame? IF it is a 69 body on a 61 frame it was switched along time ago by somebody that did a pretty good job I can't see where anybody did any hillbilly enegineering on the fit.
I do want to say this is a great site and you guys have already been alot of help just from my research of this site. I can't figure out how to post pictures yet but I will.

I don't know about the DJ's, but if it was a CJ a 69 body would fit on a 61 frame with no modifications. I don't think you'd even be able to tell they were mismatched without serial number info.

Frames from 55-75 are the same.

For VIN numbers, I suggest seeing the PDF in the thread found in this forum regarding VIN Numbers.

The CJ-5 tub might sortof fit a 3B frame, but it wouldn't fit properly, if that helps.

Are you sure it is a 1969 DJ-5A? I have one and it is like a Postal Jeep. Mine was Left Hand Drive.

Does yours have an open Universal body on it? Please post pictures.

As far as I know the 1967, 1968, 1969, and 1970 DJ-5A only came with a 153 cid Chevy II engine and a floor shift Powerglide.
I have been wrong before and will be again I am sure.

I am positive that the body is a DJ-5A because it is clearly stamped on a tag on the dash. Mine is also a left hand drive, but it also has the holes in the floor pan on the right side for the steering column and clutch and brake. The gas pedal is still over there. Mine has a 3 speed transmission (T-90???) with a two lever transfer case(T-18???). One of the reasons I started checking vin numbers was because I could not find a DJ-5A that had a standard transmission. With the numbers off the frame and motor I was thinking it the frame and motor could be a 1961 CJ-3B or a 1959 CJ-5. I would like to find out which it is and put the correct body back on the frame.
I still have not figured out how to post pictures, I could email them to someone to post.

First a belated welcome from Kansas City. Second the dash unbolts, so the tag may have came along for the ride. Third a DJ is 2wd, no transfer case.

Most anything is possible with a strong back, weak mind, and a firm grip on a hammer.

Thanks for the welcome. I will have quite a few questions for everybody before this old jeep is looking new again.
