I am doing a rear main seal and oil pan gasket.

I know the procedure fine but this is the 1st time doing this on a CJ5.

I can't for the life of me get the derned oil pan to come out all the way. It keeps hanging up on what I am guessing is the oil pickup tube on one side...the pan bulges over there with one of the holt holes sticking out on an 'ear'. The motor mounts are WAY too close together and the mount on that side is where it gets hung up.

Is there a trick or am I in for removing the transmission now?

Did you try involving the mounts and lifting up the engine? Been a long time since I've done a pan on an amc cj but inseem to recall that's what we had to do. Common on other vehicles as well

Yup, had to remove the mounts to get the pan off when I did mine.

Yep remove the mounts. I went and cut off the offending bit of steel that was holding it up so I wouldn't have to go through the same proplem twice.

Not sure on a 304, on inline 6 you remove pass. side mount. Be sure to hold motor up , usually by the bell. Put a jack under it so you can move it up just a little.

It's a PITA but I did the mount altering trick 25 years ago on my Commando, haven't had to pull the oil pan since, go figure . Although I do have to replace the dipstick tube one of these days so I guess it was worth the extra time I took way back then :). There's also the windage tray that kind of gets in the way that you have to weasel the pickup around too

As others noted. I had to take a grinder and cutting wheel to one corner of an engine mount.. Some engineer needs to return his sheepskin..

I actually ended up doing this...only had to remove 1/4" or so from the corner and the pan slid right out.

Of course getting the upper seal out was more fun. Even better still I ordered this stuff Friday...my parts stores never have what I need in stock...NONE of them. I was told Saturday by 4 PM at the latest. Well the pan gasket was there but no rear main until MONDAY! Based on my Monday schedule it will be Tuesday before I can put it all back together. yay. I'd have it done now (last night) if it had been here.

I quit trying for parts for my Dauntless. I got straight to Summit and Rock Auto. Much cheaper, and almost as quick.
