I have a fish eye problem on the hood of the Jeep. Got the hood back from the sandblaster, rinsed it down with some oil/grease remover, waited 30 minutes or so, shot with epoxy primer...and I have about a half dozen fish eyes on the hood.

The other parts that I'm painting, fenders, grill, etc. also from the sandblaster do not have fisheye. So I removed the paint from the fisheye and surrounding area, cleaned thoroughly again with new clean shop towels...waited...sprayed...hello fish eye.

Are there any tricks of the trade to get rid of these pesky little buggers? I can try to get some fish eye remover additive at the paint store if I have to, just wondering if there is something else I can try first.

I used a good quality wax and grease remover that I bought at the paint shop along with the primer etc. It has to be something on the hood. I checked the fenders, grill, and sides of the body that are painted and nothing else had fish eye.

Nothing seems as good at removing silicone traces as straight lacquer thinner or acetone.. Those wax and grease removers never seemed to do much for me on tough fisheyes back in my body shop days... FEE is decent stuff but affects drying and hardness, and sometimes you need to use it in every topcoat once you use it once....so if you can get the hood CLEAN you will be better off.

I was finally able to get rid of them today. I sanded down to metal again...cleaned really really good, then put on a very light primer coat...then a little more until I was sure they were gone.

There used to be a product called "fish-eye-eliminator" that you added to the primer/paint with each gun. It only took a few drops to make it work, and it worked GREAT! Check your local autobody supply house. ;)

x2. Use degreaser, wait until dry, fill your gun with straight laquer thinner and shoot at 35-40psi, let air dry (don't touch it again! should only take 10min to dry), shoot primer immediately. Make sure you're using a water separator inline with your gun.
