I have a 71 CJ5 and have replaced the gas tank and sending unit but the sending unit float was bad or went bad. Now the question becomes what is the correct sending unit?
    67 - 71 lists the OMIX-ADA pn 17724.04
    70-76 lists the pn 17724.07
I spoke to tech support at OMIX-ADA and he could not appreciate the difference between the two parts ie the pictures look the same.
Is it possibly an ohm difference for the gauge to read correctly?
    Your input is appreciated.

    is your float replaceable ?
if it's brass, you can buy the float from Ford.

The plastic float supplied with the Omix sender will also snap in to the factory sender. I recall Omix offered a kit with the lock ring, O-ring, float and maybe some other little pieces as a separate PN. I'd check the Omix site.

I am attempting ro replace mine at this exact moment.

Part# 17724.07 is for a 15 gallon rear tank (Readily available)
Part# 17724.04 is for a 10.5 gallon under seat tank (Back ordered)

My question back to you is where to find the correct filter, O-ring, and lock ring not to mention the 10.5 gallon sending unit?

The tack of Jim's reply was to suggest that you just replace the float. If that's what's wrong with it.

Why do you need the 10.5 gal unit if you have the rear tank? A '71 has a rear tank.

timgr - yes good question and in asking it you answered one of my questions. The 10.5gal is the under seat tank - got it. Yes I have the rear tank and replaced it and the sending unit the first time. OMIX could not answer my question but they did think (after consult) that it would be the 17724.04 but now it appears that that is for the under seat tank. By the way it does show as available at www.rockauto.com and I have very good luck with parts through them. They also list the complete kit with seal and lock ring etc.

The consensus is split but it would appear that my 71 with the under rear tank should use pn# 17724.07

    The plot thickens:
Morris lists a different sending unit for 67-71 CJ5 with V6 which turns out to be the 17724.04
The other listing is 70-86 cj5 with 15 gallon tank which appears to be the 17724.07 but they were not able to cross reference it.
Did they use a different under rear tank other than the 15gal one on some models or is this refering to the under seat tank? Did they do something different with the pre 70 CJ5 when it had a V6?

The rear tank was a mid year change in 1970. Prior to that the tank was under the driver's seat. There's only one rear tank for that era.
