Finally putting some miles on my '67 V6 today. Temp gauge moving near hot range at end of drive. Jeep has new radiator, water pump, thermostat, new antifreeze. No apparent leaks or water loss. Drive was on secondary roads, nothing over 50 mph. What else could cause overheating?

Got a shroud behind your radiator?

No shroud. Will look into that.

I don't have a shroud on my V6. Even before I re cored the radiator, as long as I am moving, I am fine.

headers? timing ported or vacuum? what is you timing at? did you spend a lot of time sitting still?

You need to verify that it may be running hot, you may have an inaccurate gauge and it is running normal temp.

Stock headers, stock ignition, kept moving, no traffic.

I'm a little suspicious of the stock temp guage, will check temp next.

Mine never overheated, but tended to run pretty hot when pulling hard in low range. I built my own fan shroud out of sheet metal to help alleviate this.
I agree with the others about not trusting the stock gauge-double check it with another gauge before you get too carried away with anything else.

Thermostat is a 190 degree. I've read that running a 160 is a mistake and doesn't help with overheating. Here in New England, the usual is a 180 or 190.

As stated before check out your gauge.

A 180 might put you in the right range of your gauge. I am a fan of a 194 thermostat myself.

Is it a cheap thermostat? I have seen them fail in under a week. But, I keep using them.

I would love a picture. This summer I could potentially get stuck in PRNJ Shore traffic.

I dont really have a good pic of it, and you cant see much with it installed. Basically I just started messing around with cardboard till I came up with a template that would work, then cut it out of sheet metal. Mine is 3 pieces, left & right & bottom. The whole thing unbolts so it's easy to remove.
