I just made the deal to buy the 74 CJ-6 I had asked about in the another thread. Someone has swapped in a factory CJ-7 T-18 (later model with 6.32 1st and reverse to the right and down)/D20 combo. I am going to run a different tranny/TC so I would want to sell the T18/D20 setup with the bell housing and all the various tidbits. I was told this setup is rare/desirable/valuable by a couple of people. What is this setup worth in todays economy (its in good working condition)?

    Thanks

    Bob

Why would you want to run a different trany/transfercase setup?
    Just a question!

There are no rocks to crawl here so I would have no use for the 6.32 1st T-18. I would rather see the T18 go to someone who would really appreciate it. This jeep is going to see just just the drive on beaches here and the road from my house to them with the occasional nice day drive to work. I am going to use a modern 5 speed (AX-15 OR NVG3500) and a D300 with wrangler springs and 33x10.50R15 BFG A/Ts. I have had this planned out for a long time but I had trouble finding a CJ6 that was either not turning to dust or has an astronomical price. I found one that is dirt cheap with only half a body but a good solid frame and nice running gear (it still drives if you hook a gas can to it - LOL). I have a line on a body tub from another member here so all I would need is a gas tank and to do some wiring repair. I am going to put it together and drive it for a week and see what breaks, then I am going to do a frame off and make all the running gear changes.

If you can verify what it is, and that its in good shape, the whole setup is in the few to several hundred dollars range.

The wide ratio T-18s are desirable in particular as part of a Jeep from that era. But I think you will start to price yourself out of the market as you go much more than, say, $500 or $600. At that price, you're getting close to what it would cost to gather all the pieces to do the swap with a different Jeep, or even a Ford, T-18.

You're sure it's not a Ford T-18 that's been converted? The later Ford transmissions have that shift pattern. How do you know it's from a CJ?

Your feelings about the vehicle and what you want to do with it might change after you drive it for a while. Having the crawler gear is a great asset in a Jeep ... owners go way out of their way to put a combo like that in their Jeep.

The shift pattern for reverse you describe matches a late model Ford T-18. They have reverse to the right and towards the back of the Jeep. The Jeep models, except some very late PU's or Waggy's, have reverse to the right and towards the dash. At least all the ones I've seen. I would suggest driving it first then decide if you really want to get rid of it. As to value, around here with all pieces $350-$500. If it really is a '77-'79 CJ T-18 the you will need to sell the bellhousing to go with it. Plan on that when you convert....

Can you post a pic of what you have? We could probably id it for you.

I actually don't know for sure that it is a CJ setup but it appears to be and everything I see is correct based on what the seller has told me. It is in the Jeep and it runs and drives with no problems (mechanically) so it is a complete working setup.

Here is what I am going by to make this determination (info found here and at novak):

It has the PTO port on the drivers side only (I am told Ford T18s have them on the passenger side and the T19 has them on both sides)

It has no steel or aluminum adapter plate between the case and the bellhousing

The drivers side lower attachment point is a stud and nut instead of a bolt with the other 3 points being bolts (which I am told is correct for a Jeep CJ T18 and shows its not an IH T18)

Reverse is to the right and down which is correct for a late 70s CJ

Supposedly all of the late CJ T18s came with the 6.32 1st.

Am I missing something or do I have something wrong?

If I where you I'd just run it the way it is for now and see how you like it. Your really going to spend a lot of money and time swapping out a combo that most people spend time and money installing. Oh well to each is own. Good luck.

@shoepick - I believe it would with the exception of the rear driveshaft. It is coming out of a CJ6 with a factory 304 so I believe everything else would be the same. If I am wrong here someone please correct me.

@jpflat2a - I will definitely post it for sale here once I have the Jeep and get the swap done. I would rather have a member here put it to good use.

@windyhill - I will most likely drive it a few times once I finish the body swap as I want to make sure everything works before I sell anything. I drove a Jeep with that tranny in it a few years back and it didn't work well for me in this area. You never know though.

    Thanks
