Ok, I'm trying to take off the timing chain cover because I need to replace the gasket (its leaking antifreeze) and I've hit a small snag, the vibration damper bolt. When I try to take it off it just turns the engine over. I've never taken one of them off but the only advice I've heard is to brace a breaker bar against the ground and turn the engine over. Unfortionatly that doesn't sound like the smartest thing to do and I was wondering if there is a better way, without so much of a risk of damaging my jeep or myself.

I had this problem too. Actually I found the answer here when I searched, buried in some thread.

Since you're replacing the oil pan gasket anyway, drop the oil pan and put a piece of wood between the crank and the block.

What I do know is this: do NOT use a screwdriver in the dampner to help!! Replacement dampners are hard to come by:rofl: ... OBTW, check the thread in Trail Rides for the VA/ NC/ "whoever is an ECJ5er" BBQ thread...

I wouldn't feel too bad about not finding it I can't remember what thread it's buried in. ;)

I used a handle off some old pruning shears that were shot. The handle was about 1.5" diameter. Worked well for on and off.

I keep a block of wood about 1'' x 2'' x 1' in my garage. Turns out to be one of the most useful and used tools I have. It gets coupled with a hammer alot :) Thanks, I think I'll be able to get it off.

I keep my eye on the bbq. I think I'll still be in college then, though.

A strap wrench is a cheap solution to this problem and others like it. One can be purchased at Sears or probably any hardware store.:v6:

If you can get to the fly wheel gears for the starter ring you can use a bar or piece of wood to jam the ring.

i've done one with by hitting a breaker bar with a 2 lb sledge (just gotta shock it, not move it very much) and another using the breaker bar wedged against the ground and turning the starter over. i didn't like the idea of messing up the frame i spent time cleaning up, and knew it wouldn't bend but didn't want to take the chance.

Is it for the '70 V6?? If so, is the engine running? If so, This'll work like a charm!!

Go underneath and place a breaker bar w/ socket on the nut as securely as you can, in an orientation so that the grip-end of the breaker bar rests in/above the passenger side spring. Go back up and unplug the center distributor plug wire. Start engine; let it turn over a single turn or 2. The breaker bar/socket will likewise spin clockwise with the engine, and the counter-clockwise action on the nut will loosen 'er the moment the breaker bar hits the frame (or other place to bind). Once results are achieved, replace dist. center spark plug wire.

Found this all out by accident....

I have used an impact wrench any time I've had to remove a damper. Don't know if you have a short shaft impact, but a standard shaft impact will typically do the job.

    Question
I have 71 jeepster and i need to get vibration damper off.
I can't seem to take that center bolt out...
Is it clockwise or counter clockwise?
I tried few time clockwise...But, I 'm thinking its got to be counter clockwise.
But not able to take 'em off.
    Any help would be appreciated.
