That's what it is supposed to do. When you select reverse the switch contacts close and the terminals are shorted together.

Is one of your switch terminals shorting to the transmission case in reverse? It's not supposed to do that, if that is the case replace it.

It was my understanding that the wire running to the switch was a hot wire. And my switch when the contacts close it's shorting out on the switch case itself. I connected a hot wire to it and it melted the wire when I select reverse. Isn't a hot wire suppose to connect to that?:?

12 volts in. When switch is activated then 12 volts out to the lights. It is not necessarally the switch. Could be a short to ground in the wiring back to the lights also.

Yes but, I don't have any wiring connected yet. It's shorting to the switch without any thing hooked up to it...so it must be the switch itself.

    Thanks though,

You really need a fuse in the power "in" wire at least heavy enough to carry what ever backup light you are using.

Thanks, I added a fuse today. I don't know who wired this CJ but when I got it, it only had one fuse, and that was in the light switch. I've added five or six fuses already.

But I've almost got all the wiring fix. I got the Fuel gauge working today, had to replace the sending unit. I got one that was made for a locking ring but my gas tank in made for three screws to hold it in (got it from Ebay) the listing on the sending unit said it was for a 67 through 70 something, but I made a gasket and drilled three holes in the edges and she's working great...:D
More or less all I lack (with the wiring) is getting the wiring hooked up for the backup lamps and the hi-beam light.

I'm needing three instrument cluster light sockets for the speedometer. It doesn't have one for the hi-beam, and some others.

    Thanks for the info,

I'm looking for a T-14 reverse light switch, and not having much luck. Any idea what other trannys have the same switch...or a part number from somewher would be great.

T15, T150 are the same. 948345 Turner 4WD or Rugged Ridge list them under that part number.

Thanks guys. I'll check out those options. Most of what I've been finding (that I can get any specs on) have 1/2" threads, mine has 9/16"...but I'll check those sources. Thanks again.

Standard NS20 or Airtex 1S5186 should work. Common part.

So while we're on the subject of reverse light switches, I have the T98 and the switch is mounted in the top left casting plug (looking at it from the rear of the transmission). It is not threaded and was very loose when I pulled the transmission. It seems to have been a "press fit". The castinging plug hole isn't threaded either (at least it doesn't appear to be), but it is filthy at the moment. When I tried to seat it back in the hole using only hand pressure it stays in place but I am concerned that it won't stay that way after I finish the rebuild. Any ideas or suggestions?
