    Hey all.
    I was told that my 65 CJ5 had 5.38s
I was out comparing the axles with my 57 pickup cause it seems to rev higher. Sure enough the truck has 4.88s, so I checked the 5. Lifted a tire and rotated it twice and the U-joint rotated 4.1 turns. 4.10! Is that common? Any guess as my top speed if I pull the OD?

Should be 4.27s in there, if not 5.38's.

My 65 had 5.38's I switched axles to some 3.73's out of a 76 CJ 7 when I put the V6 in. It would scream at 35 MPH with the 5.38's

I've had my 66 CJ-5 with the Dauntless for 30 years, and I thought it came original with 3.73's??

4 cyl. came with either 4.27 or 5.38 gears, originally 5.38 was standard, early '60s switched to 4.27 being standard. V6 came with 3.73 standard and 4.88 optional.

5.38 axles with a Warn OD engaged will work out to about a 4.10 ratio. Any chance you had the extra lever forward?

That won't effect how many times the driveshaft turns relative to the wheel though...

Any chance someone may have swapped in different gears at some point?

Ok, first drop the diff cover and do a tooth count(chances are that the oil needs changing anyway). Divide the ring gear count by the pinion count to get the correct gear ratio. Then let us know what it is as well as your tire size and we can give you a general idea as to top speed. Of course you could put the OD in direct drive and drive as fast as you can.
