saginawed m38?

    Does anyone have any info on the Herms saginaw reverse rotaion conversion? I like how the the box is in the engine bay out of sight and behind the front cross member. Is there any issues with fitment? And also how hard to come by are the reverse rotation manual boxes? Which are the best to use for this application? Any help is greatly appreciated!! Thank you, Steve

    herms steering only works with v6 equipped jeeps.

    On his website he has an application for a 4 cylinder engine. Says its a different kit?

    I'm not much help as I'm not a fan of this conversion but I did a simple search using "Herm's steering conversion" and a bunch of posts came up. Might be a good place to start.

    I have a CJ2A with original engine. I purchased Herm's kit, knowing there were interference issues with the front plate / motor mount. Modified that. Then the front cross member was an issue, of course CJ2A has the round cross member. Perhaps the later cross member would be less of a problem. Changed the cross member, which of course meant that I had to change the radiator mount - early bottom mount radiator. Even with these mods, I did not like the way this was turning out. So I sold the steering box, brackets, pitman arm, etc to someone else and put a saginaw out front. I used a standard box, not power, and I am delighted with the outcome.

    I just bought a manual box out of a 79 cj5, hoping that will work? I also have the round crossmember out front and am not interested in removing it. Do you have any pics of your set-up on the CJ2A, or any tips, suggestions on what to expect. Thanks a lot! Steve

    Here's the Saginaw steering info thread with lots of postings. Many cover early CJ-5's and what not but there should be some flatty's. The early CJ stuff should for the most start apply. This thread is in the Builds and Fabricators forum.

    I do them to the flattie all the time. I normally remove and change the front cross member, but I also run the V6s. You could follow the ones I have done and just notch the front crossmember. I did one that way for a friend and used some tube to fill the notch in the crossmember so as not to weaken it.

    If you mount the box a little bit lower and use a sprint-car-style u-joint in place of the stock "rag joint" you can easily do a saginaw swap without touching the stock crossmember. I used a cast mount from a Jeepster and a manual saggy box from a late 70's CJ and it worked out GREAT!

    McRuff's mount can also be used to position the box so that yu don't have to hack the crossmember. This pic is a bit deceiving because of the camera angle, the steering shaft just clears the crossmember, and with the stock pitman arm the drag link is darned near parallel to the tie rod so bump steer is negligible.

    I see you have lift shackles on your 2A, I have the stock shackles. Was wondering if this will be an issue? Also is there a pic of Mcgruff's mount anywhere? Thanks, Steve

    Shackles shouldn't be an issue, they were simply what I had laying around.

    There are several folks around who have used McRuff's mount, you should be able to find a picture using the search function, or else contact Mike directly. ;)
