hub puller 59 cj

built a new hub puller today bolt didn't hold up , do u have to wack on the hub or do i need to use a bigger bolt if anybody has any idea's i would appriciate it

 

Use a grade 8 bolt and nut and that will hold up better than what you have. Tighten your puller bolt and then smack it... tighten then smack... BE SURE YOU LOOSEN THE AXLE NUT ON THE AXLE BUT LEAVE IT ON THE AXLE!!! if not the hub will come off with a boom and fly across the room and injure you or damage anything in it's path! Also I have heard of tightening your puller and just leaving it on there overnight....

 

thanks i will give it a wirl , i tried to find a grade 8 but that was all i had in my bolt box to lazy to drive to hardware store , thanks for letting me know about leaving the hub bolt on .

 

I used a 1" grade 5 fine thread bolt on the puller I built. The fine thread pitch gives more pulling force with the equivalent torque because of the lower helix angle of the threads. There is a grade 8 nut welded on the inside of the puller for the bolt to thread into.

Use a fine threaded bolt and nut, more pulling power, and wack the end of the bolt as you are putting pressure on it. Makes a huge difference. Also lubricate the threads.

 

Wow!!! These pullers pictured look a lot easier to use than the one I bought years ago. Mine's more universal and a bit of a PITA to assemble on the hub but, it came with a nice bar that fits over the bolt head which allows good striking area for the BFH. No pics, it's buried in the storage garage. I think it came from JCWhitney

 

Just pulled mine off today using 3 jaw gear puller,Just stand to the side when it came loose it flew about 3 feet

i hadnt read your post before i did it

 

why ? do you need to pull the hub. just asking .

 

changed the brakes to 11 inchers, Also to change bearings ,seal etc

 

when you put the new 11" backing plates on do u weld the e brake holes up

 

If you're not using the e-brake holes just get some rubber plugs and plug 'em up. That way if you decide to add the e-brake later you can.

 

finally built a hub puller that works got them off tonite only took three different designs thanks for all the help
