Any one ever use this company for factory color paint? I'm thinking of reviving the "Silver Green Poly" on the 'ol '74 and was wanting some feedback.

TCP Global is the company behind autocolorlibrary. I seriously considered them but spent some time googling and saw some reviews that were less than flattering. But it depends on what paint you're buying, as they sell many different brands. If you buy PPG paint from them it will obviously be as good as PPG paint from any dealer. If you buy their house brand "Restoration Shop" you will probably get about what you pay for.

So if I decide to order from these guys will I be getting the exact silver green poly color PPG paint that was used in '74?

P.S. What is the recommended type of paint to get? The silver green poly basecoat and then clear it, or a lacquer, urethane, or enamel? How many gallons would be needed?

speaking for myself, i have used about every brand of paint out there and the restoration shop brand is some of the best paint i have ever sprayed. your light blues and greens have more black pigments than color and bad to streak or tiger stripe if you are not careful. if you go with that color, i would spray base coat, clear coat. that just me.

So I can just go to a paint store and tell them the paint code and get the exact PPG color? Sorry if that is a dumb question. Not very savvy about paint in general.

    Yes.

The TCP Global paint is said to be good stuff, but you're better off with a local paint store if there is one near you (IMO). You'll pay a premium for a custom color, regardless whether you purchase on-line or not.

Check the price at your NAPA, and compare them to the price for materials at a bona fide automotive paint store. NAPA may be cheaper, but you'll probably get better advice from a paint store.

The PPG color number will (should) reference into any manufacturer's color mixing system (duPont, PPG, BASF, whatever). You will have a wide range of prices available to you, depending on the quality of product that you choose. The paint store will help you a lot here. The original paint on these Jeeps was likely an acrylic enamel, and was baked. To do a respray, you'll want a catalyzed (2K) product.

My suggestion - get a copy of Pat Ganahl's "How to paint your car on a budget" to fill in some background about what you are doing. There is a LOT to painting and body work, and no one best way to go about it. Every painter has his own system and preferences, so unless you have a little background info, you will probably get confusing and contradictory advice from more than one source.

You can also read the primers on the autobody101 site - http://www.autobody101.com/content/ sp. http://www.autobody101.com/content/articles/color-choice-buying-paint/ and http://www.autobody101.com/content/articles/paint-technology/ they will provide an overview in one source. Or read Carey's painting lessons in the archives at IFSJA http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=44602

good advise tim the biggest thing to remember with paint is you get what you pay for cheap price =cheap paint.....and I wouldn't use ANY un catalyzed product ( primer sealer topcoat)it all should be 2k
