    Philip, first off GREAT job!

Can you tell me where the brass connecter directly over the distributer is supposed to go? Mine went to the fuel pump on the other side of the engine and split into the exhaust valve area, but I don't know what to do with it now that I have a non-vacuum fuel pump. Any ideas?

I used an inverted flare plug in the tee where it split off to the fuel pump.

Is that something I can get at Napa? If I replace that line can I just run it directly around the engine and eliminate the connector?

PS. Sorry to jack your thread, but your picture was too convenient to ignore... Thanks!

Well not as much progress as anticipated.

We DID get the valves installed and set.

Pistons removed/cleand-up... and new rings installed.

    [IMG][IMG][IMG]

Neat shot of the interior markings on the "WILLYS" piston.

Started buttoning up the oil pan and Exhaust valve gaskets and covers.

We ended up at the farm for a couple weeks.
And got a little distracted by hogs/deer/Santa Claus and ...

    [IMG][IMG][IMG]

    ....building a fence.

    [IMG][IMG]
(Cedar fence like his Great Grandpa used to make.)

But the JEEP is still where we left it so we will resume shortly.

Head Gasket is ready to go.Then I'll set it back in the frame and mate up tranny & xfer case[IMG]

He is getting antsy to turn the key. Wants it running by this summer...

    Oh and I've searched but...

Doesn't the head gasket go in dry (no RTV/poocky). That seemed to be the consensus if I recall.

Looking really good for the progress you have made.

    One bit of caution/concern though-------

In this photo, there appears to be some compromise to the integrity of the mating surface of the block.

From just a photo, it is hard to tell if this is only staining, or if there is surface etching/pitting beside the cylinder.

Even with the low compression ratio of the old engine, it is important to have a smooth and flat mating surface for the head.

You did have the head surfaced, didnt you??

I hate to be a "nay sayer", but if there is a problem, fixing it now is a lot easier than tearing the thing back apart later.

Hopefully this is just a photo induced bit of non-problem.

No machining has taken place. Should it have? Maybe, but I think it will be OK. Once Garrett gives me the JEEP back, (when he is done with it). The NEXT engine rebuild will probably be a full machine shop job.

It is just staining, no etching/pitting.

You will be allowed to tell me I told you so. But I hope it doesn't come to that. :)

Not a lot to report. We didn't work on in much over the winter. But as this nicer weather sets in my son mentions how it is Jeep weather, hint, hint...

I need to go down to the neighbor's and get his cherry picker so I can drop the motor back in, replace the clutch, and bolt tranny/xfer back up.

We did beat on the fenders a little. One was split/cut-up and we couldn't get anywhere 'til I spot welded it for stability while we beat on it.

So here is a bunny with a pancake . 'Til I can come up with more to report.

A little Sunday afternoon body work.

I am not very detail oriented so Body work is my nemesis.

I took a damaged donor fender (Thanks to ojgrsoi here) and my beat-up fender and came up with a decent combo.

Those spot weld bits are neat...'til you break 'em. Then it was a reg-old drill bit.
