T86 rebuild help

    I've got a 1966 cj5 with the 225 v6 and a t86 tranny. I'm not a mechanic but these old jeeps are pretty simple. I've pulled the tranny out and its sitting on my shop table (I'm still cleaning it off). I'm replacing the seals in the t-case and the tranny because they leak oil. I'd like some tips on disassembly and any unusual wear patterns to look for.

    I've found a guide that covers all this for the t90 but nothing on the t86. This is my first time doing transmission work alone, so thanks in advance for any advice!

    I expect you can rebuild the T-86 with exactly the same instructions you'd use for the T-90. The T-86 is basically a T-90 in a different case. The T-86 is internally different from the T-90 due to the spiraling splines on the main shaft, and a different bevel on the sliding gear - this renders the parts non-interchangeable. The internal parts are not interchangeable, but you can take all the guts from a T-90 and put them in a T-86 case with no change in fit or function of the resulting transmission. Very similar.

    ditto on what timgr said, when I rebuilt mine, I just followed t-90 instructions.

    Me too. There were some small differences with the bronze/steel washers, but I used rick stiver's guide and it went together pretty easily.

    Thanks for the help guys! I appreciate all the time and effort everyone on this site puts into helping those of us who are less tech-savvy.

    The transmission ran fine, but just about every seal under that jeep leaked oil. As such, I was just planning to replace some seals and inspect some items for wear. These instructions are amazing, and go far above and beyond what I had planned to do.

    update!

    There are 2 gears in the bottom of the transmission that lead into the t-case which have some mauled teeth. I wanted to get a professional to do the work, and called the only transmission place near by. He wanted 600 bucks just in labor!

    I called a friend who does jeep work and he has a couple t86s laying around for parts. 180 bucks in labor and if he replaces everything in the tranny/tcase, it will be 300 for parts.

    The transmission work exceed my comfort level, and I want it done right, so its going to spokane to have everything checked out and reworked.

    That T-86 is the weak link behind the V6-225. I have tore up two of them (86's) and two T-90's. One was stupidity and the others was accidental wheel hop in pretty rough trails. I have a T-15 in the shop I am considering putting in the Tux but really wanted to keep it close to stock although the T-90 is not stock. I always feared going into low 4W with the 86 and 90. Maybe it's just me..
