Is there a way to get the exhaust from entering the cab? I have a 66 with the Konig (sp?) hardtop, and its not so bad except for when I am slowing down...then I know I am loosing some brain cells. Is this just normal? I know the exhaust goes all the way to the back.

Are you sure you don't have an exhaust leak somewhere? My exhaust exits at the left rear corner and I don't usually get exhaust smells either with top up or down.

Yes, with the top on and the exhaust exiting at the back corner, fumes should not be a problem.

yeah, I will have to check it. Mine exits the rear corner as well. I just bought the Jeep, but my last cj5 had the same issue.
I was unsure if thats just how these things were.

    Thanks guys

You might check your firewall for extra holes. Do you have a factory heater and does it draw air through the grille or is it drawing from the engine compartment?

factory heater, yes, but it pulls from the vent by the grill. Gonna check the exhaust over this weekend. Just bought it.

I had this problem with my exhaust. As I under stand it, it has to do with airflow around the body and exhaust pipe tip. My pipe used to come out past the body at the corner about 1"- 2" and at slow speeds exhaust came inside. I crushed the pipe between a rock and the body so I slash cut it even with the body so it would not pinch closed again and I had an unintended benefit of not having exhaust inside at slow speed. Just my observations on this problem.[IMG]

exhaust tip end should extend about 3 inches from under the tub to prevent exhaust build up under jeep
any leaks from manifold to rear of jeep will also cause build up under jeep causing exhaust to come up in the cab

I went through the exhaust today, and the only thing I could find was the muffler which is under the back of the tub, has a clamp on one side, but nothing on the other side, with a small gap between the tube and the muffler inlet. So will weld that up tomorrow and see if that helps. The only other joint not welded is where it mounts to the exhaust manifold, so maybe that gasket is bad as well? Well see.

That is where my exhaust leak is. Right where the driver's side exhaust manifold meets the pipe.

Exhust pipe should end outside the body border line and face down to the surface. If you turn it to the side of the body, its the best.
When this jeep move forward it sucks air from the rear area to the cab. Every cabin with rectangle structure behave like that (even my Toyota pick-up)
(I find it hard to explain in english)...
This phenomenon is well known in all kind of open cars and buses. One way to solve it is to add some item to "break" that inhalation from the rear area - you can use long antenna or something similar.
