Yes everything I see indicates this is a Jewels.
Apparently It has a few Jewels custom made options.
Some of the more common components are not seen.......
Like the Jewels hood latches tailgate fasteners etc.

I see that the glove box lid is not stainless which seems not typical for a Jewels.
Jewels did fabricate stainless gas tanks. The metal in mine is thin gauge while the filler necks are thick and tapered down.
The fuel send units used on my stainless tanks were rivotted into place.
Note the non polished spot welds around the filler indent on the tub. That is typical with other Jewels examples.

This tailgarte looks exactly correct as a Jewels fabrication including the thick stainless hinges.
Jewels did not produce tailgate chains but instead procuced a special bolt (not seen) to hold the tailgate closed.
I have never before seen a Jewels draw bar but the rear frame crossmember was certainly available.
The rear seat back looks like a Jewels.

The transmission hump area was rather generic fitting since so many ended up with custom drivetrains.

This is not a Jewels hood latch but the stainless W/S and hood hinges look right.

This is not the typical built Jewels roll bar, however it is a very nice full cage.
Note the unpolished spot welds along the inner wheel house and tool box area.

Apparently this rear seat frame includes an optional storage box.
Note the Jewels corner notching on the wheel house.
Jewels did not rib the top of the wheel house nor did they rib the floor pan.

It seems to me that Jewels would have produced stainless W/S latches for a CJ-5.

Note that the Jewels firewall area is fabricated from a thin gauge stainless.

This pic opens up a whole new question. Is this a Renegade I ?
Now you will want to dertermine if it is a Renegade I.

Considering your stated timeline I have no doubt this is a genuine Jewels.
The CJ-5's were not produced until the early 1980's and by 1986 they were no longer available.
If it is a Renegade I that will effect the desired options.
A true Renegade I all stainless Jewels Jeep is the absolute apex of Jeep design and quality constuction.
Owning a Jeep with soooo very much potential is a mixed blessing.
It will require ample time and money to bring it to its fullest potential.

 

Ken, thanks for all of your knowledge on the Jewels cj5. it sounds like i have a rare piece of art on my hands, this is probably a hard question to answere but do you have any idea how much more of a value my cj has over a stock body? i was also woundering what you meant by if it is a Renegade 1, and do you have any idea of approxamently how many of them were manufactured, another tuff one to answere.

Renegade I = 1970 I believe. Somewhere around 250 Renegade I's were made. Never heard of a "Jewel" before.

 

Cost was $ 6500 (U.S.A.) for the Jewels all stainless early CJ-5 tub when they were last available in 1985.

Can someone find him the link to the Renegade I information ?
