Ill brief you first . Bought a 71 cj5 with the V6 , good drive train junk body .

Bought a 68 cj5 , glass body , good frame ect. F4 was out , i put it in but im finding it very troublesome to get any parts .

I am going to pull the dauntless and put it in the 68 . The question is this .

Do i need to pull the trans T case and all ?

If im correct the F4 had a T 90 trans . The 71 would be a T 14 and i cant not just change the motor and bellhousing . Is that correct ?

I was told the T 90 is stronger but you can not put the dauntless on that trans ?

Going to start the tear down tomorrow .

2nd question , If i need to change motor trans and t case will the twin stick shifter work on the single stick T case . Im pretty sure there both T18 and was made in single and twin stick versions . Id like to keep the twin stick configuration .

gave that a lot of thought but the path of least resistence is to change the drive train . The 68 has a good fuel tank , brakes that work , good leaf springs . All those items are an issue on the 71 .

I would swing the full engine, tranny, tcase from the 71 over. Be sure to measure 4X on the motor mount swap. Don't let the drive lines dictate where things fit, do it right.

BTW - make sure the 71 does not have the nice flanged axle before going to all this.

The t90 is not stronger than the t14 and the t14 is syncro'd in all forward gears. What is the issue with the 71's fuel tank and brakes. The rear tank is desireable and larger in capacity. Your 71 should have the oddball bellhousing that has no adapter to mate the trans to so no the t90 will not bolt to it at all..

I'd have to agree here. The T14 got a bad wrap simply because a lot of them were/ are breaking, not because they're weaker, but because they were put behind the V6 which is capable of breaking them. The T90 was put behind the F head, which isn't really capable of breaking much of anything.
This is mostly just my opinion though.

That crossed my mind as well when i was told the T14 was weaker .

The 71 , fuel tank is rotted out , brake lines , shoes probable the master cylender all junk . stearing is slopped out . I did drive it around the yard , motor trans and T case seem fine . The 68 is just all around better .

I agree with what warloch posted-swap over the full set up. If you want to change the tcase to twin stick it's relatively easy to do. The T90 is a pretty stout trans in 1st and reverse, but 2nd and 3rd synchros are weak and the non synchro 1st can be a hassle on the street. I'd just as soon have a T14. And keep the rear axle out of the 71! Assuming that it's the stock unit, it'll be a 30 spline Dana 44 with 1 piece axles & offset rear diff-just about bulletproof in a CJ.

I'd swap the good parts from the 68 on the 71. much less work over all.

I twin stick'd my dana 18, not hard, switched my t86aa for the t14 and added a flanged 44 to mine. much stronger setup.

breaking parts should not be an issue for this rig . I have a dedicated wheeler . This Cj is more for puddling around town , mild two track riding . Grandkids think its the cool beans .
