I have a spare dana 44 rear and I am taking all the good parts off of it to keep as spares. I have removed the 5 or so bolts which hold the inner plate to secure the axel, but the axel does not come out. Do I need to rapp it or set up some method to push between the axel and the rear plate?

Once the bolts are removed, I use a slide hammer.

sorry guys after I wrote it i couldn't hardly figure out what I said, anyway what is a slide hammer? I tried prying between the brake back plate and the backside of the spindle and it won't budge. I've sprayed it with PB to ttry and get it to loosen up. Maybe I need to heat up the axel casing??

You can invert the brake drum and screw the lugnuts in a few threads and use that to help pull the shafts out.

At this point all that's holding the axle in is the fit of the seal to the axle tube - usually a good hard jerk will get it out. The inverted brake drum works too.

they do, i've rented slide hammers from them before.

i dont know if im not reading right or if my brain quit, but if you are pulling the axle out did you take the diff cover out and the pin out the middle so you could slide the axle in a hair and take the C-clip off?

I could be off base, but if we are doing what i think we are you have to do that too.

I took the diff cover off and I don't see any pin. Just the splind shaft, so I don't think there is a pin. I will try the reversed dumb idea.
    thanks for the advice everyone

These are not C-clip retained axles so no need to even pull the cover, although a good idea for inspection and changing the oil.

yea, just spin the brake drum around, thread the lug nuts on a little, and use it as a slide hammer. No need to rent anything. It should come right out.

Does any one know of a way to get the broken end of the axle out of the carrier gear without pulling the carrier apart ? can you drill the pinion shaft bolt lock pin bolt ? or do you need to pull the carrier out??:(
