Is there any way to make 2wd low a possibility with stock parts. I can only be in low range in four wheel drive.

  2. i've heard if you have the double stick then all you have to do is take out the detent ball and spring that prevents the shifter from going into low 2wd without shifting the front in too. dont know for sure though cause all i have is the single shifter.

pretty sure all that's needed is to remove the inter-lock pill from between the shifters in your TC (assuming a D18)

Does anyone have pictures or a source to walk me through performing this procedure. I am not familiar with the inner workings of any transmissions or transfer cases. I do not know for sure what t-case is in the '63. It is a twin stick and would have the original as my grandfather never swapped it out for something else.

There's an interlock device between the 2 shift rails you have to remove. It's shaped like a medicine capsule, hence the term "interlock pill". You have to take the transfer case apart to do this.
You can also just run in 4low with the hubs unlocked.

Are both your drivelines off center to the passenger side if so you have the Dana 18 and I think you cannot do the 2wd low with it. Just don't lock your hubs.

yes you can if the interlock is removed

for the original poster go here http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/dana_18_rebuild_guide.htm
look at the diagram, it's #20 on the list, as stated you would need to dis assemble the TC to accomplish this

Yea I thought you could only do the true twin stick with the D20 and the D300 thanks for the info.

I must be missing something, I don't see any reason to shift to 4-LO without shifting in the front axle. I have lockouts in the front, so if I need 4X4, i can use it that way.
Yes, I have put mine into 4LO to push stuff around my yard, mostly for the slower speed
I must be dense, could somebody explain to me why this is such an issue?

All I did to remove the "Pill" was pull the plug <17> and the spring along with the ball <18 & 19 > shifted the transfer case to align the pill <20> with hole the spring came out and used a small magnet to extract the pill, then put <19,18, & 17 > back in place, while transfer & trans still in jeep.
As for why I would do this is there are times I am on hard packed dirt roads and want the slow speed of 1st gear low range when checking livestock and do not want to put drive line system in a bind. The summer dirt roads are as hard as pavement and do not wish to get out and unlock hubs just to have to get back out to lock up to cross a creak or climb a hill

I use 2 low quite often-I've got a powerlock front diff and in 4wd it's hard to turn. So I usually run trails in 2wd low till I really need 4wd. You'd be surprised how far it goes in 2low! (power lock in the rear also)

  16. for me it would be that 4hi 1st is still to fast on the trails I have to put mine in 4lo front unlocked to do any serious puttin around.

Yep, Up on the old ranch you need slow speed more than 4wd. But when you do need 4wd it's nice not to have to set the brake and get out to turn in the hubs.

Thank you for the input. I will try to remove the "pill". My CJ5 does not have lock out hubs.

Just a heads up, the interlock pill (#20) is between the shift rails and one shift rail needs to be removed to remove the interlock pill. You can't just remove the plug, poppet spring, and poppet ball and shift the rail to align with the hole as there is no hole in the shift rails and no way the pill can be removed. It is literally captured between the shift rails.

For me, I like having more options in the transfer case. Not having the front end turning reduces wear and tear when I need to move slow but don't need four wheel drive. It also makes it easier to steer with a front locker or limited slip.

I removed the "pill" when i rebuilt the transfer case, really just got in my way when trying to put the sticks in so i "forget it".
