I have a 73 cj5 with bestop high back seats in the jeep right now and there is no room. The steering wheel is almost in my chest. My question is, is there a seat out there that will give me more room. Does the low back give more room or is there an after market that gives more room.

My new rugged ridge low back gives no relief from being too close.
I'm considering trying to find a military seat from an M38A1 or try to have a custom seat made that will be thinner.
I'm not ready to notch out the fenderwell just yet.

I'm running yj seats and did the fender well notch. I am 6ft and am quite comfortable in the cj now. I had te bestop high backs and thought they were junk, the bar that goes across the lower back was killer after a couple of hours on the trail.

    Original column and wheel?

Not sure if you'll have much luck with that combo. I did find out that the seats out of a 70's or 80's Dodge van fit pretty well with minor mods and have a nice bucket to them, without sitting too vertical. Here's a pic of one...cost me $35 bucks at a pull-a-part.

I fit mine onto the 76+ CJ brackets though. The back of the seats form well to the shape of the rear fender well.

I used a set of buckets from a late 80s Chevy cavalier.
I used my original 73 brackets to mount them. I had to move the brackets around but they worked well and some of my 6 foot buddies could drive it.

This time around I am either putting Srt4 seats in it and notching the Fenderwells.... or just putting some boat seats in it...

I have a set of 60/40 seat in my '74 now. I have a few sets of seat here and about, (I'm a pack rat).
You can make ANY seat fit, but if'n you want room, hmm, another story in the CJ5's.
My current ride has a Fiber glass body with no notch for the seats, hence with the HUGE steering wheel, I'm close.
The seats are back against the rear fender well.
I figure I have less room to travel when I hit something and my face is headed for that steering wheel!:)
I tried 4 different seat combos before settling on the orginal seats.
My '61 CJ 5 hads the notch, I installed a set of racing seat, and with the notch-plenty of room.
Like a few others, I just can't seem to cut a new tub for a bit of leg room.
Good thing I'm still kinda thin!

I have been pondering seat replacement. I have put aftermarket in early cj's and been unhappy. Just today I was at 2 wrecking yards looking around. left with nothing. I have stock low-backs with stock colum and a 13 inch wheel. I am 6'2" and have room right now but don't want to lose any!

I have a set of the plastic race seats I have been thinking of putting in as they are thinner but would it make that much difference?

Here is a list of JY jeep seat replacments. I have a set of mustang seats that are almost a bolt in deal. But they are covered in material and not weather proof.

    Junkyard seat suggestions:
Honda civic seats might be a near bolt in.
    Fiero
    Mustang
    Sunfire
    Cavalier
    Escort GT
    Nissan 300zx
    Accord
    **86-91 BMW 3 series sport (318is, 325es, 325is)
wanna bad *** seat? get a seat out of a mid 90's 3 series coupe. you wont be dissapointed...better yet E36 M3 seats are the cats meow....hell any BMW seat is

**These are RX-7 seats.... they are VERY comfortable, have a flat 4 bolt pattern (stock jeepish,) super light (fiberglass shell,) and fit harnesses perfectly..

    86-93 Acura Integra

**Late model sunfire / Cavalier seats bolt up to stock YJ / CJ seat frames. No mods needed. Cheap at the yard and plentiful. The head rest is seperate and the seats have good bolsters.

Mitsubishi 3000 GT...pretty push, and have seperate headrests. The only dowside is that they are a little wide

93-97 MX6 seats with the integrated headrest. Firm seating, reclining, cloth, hard plastic backs, strong frames and awesome looking. I love the rounded head rests and a 4-point is definitely in the future. Passengers side flips forward and the drivers side bottom has tilt adjust. Still have to decide which sliders to use (YJ or MX6) but they should be easy to fab in

Mistubishi Starion/Dodge Conquest from the 80's

I have the BMW seats and they are great! They are all fully adjustable. Now if I could only figure out the electronics so that I COULD adjust them.

Also, I just found out I am having a boy so I need to put in a back seat. Does anybody know what back seats will fit between the fenders of an early CJ?

To add another couple of seats,
Toyota Celica of many years, Just got some that's going in the Daughter's '70 and I had a set in the '59 '5 until they finally fell apart (exposed to weather for many, many years, my own fault)
Hyundai seats, late '80's-'90 fit nice and are comfortable as well.
