Hey guys took the 5 out for a trail ride tonight with a friend on some of the old haul roads here in Ohio...... and had a blast. Took the wife with me. It was her first trail ride. She is a total city girl and a big chicken when it comes to things like this but said she would go again. (I did behave myself):D

Anyway tonight while we were out I noticed my JEEP smoking from the tail pipe. It was a solid stream of smoke from idle up to like 2000 rpm's........but it ran great just like normal. The same amount of power my :hurrican: has always had.
I haven't looked at it since I got home. But was wanting a few Ideas where to start looking in the morning for something wrong. It does use a little oil but usually on take off it will puff a little bit.

    What do you guys think?

    thanks a bunch!!!

Sounds like you got a bad valve guide. My '72 does the same exact thing. Runs great but uses a little oil and puffs the white smoke. Only runs good though for a few weeks then I got to change plugs because it will start fouling the one plug.

It was white smoke. I haven't changed the plugs for a long time but they do get pretty black.

Crank case building too much pressure, valve quides worn, oil dilution from fuel, etc.

How much smoke? (I know that's hard to describe).
White smoke normally indicates coolant/ water in the combustion chamber.

Yes, white smoke is steam. Could be a blown head gasket, or something similar that's putting water into the combustion chamber.

Patrick and Tim thats what I was thinking last night when I saw it. But it runs so smooth and doesn't heat up. When I got the jeep 10+ years ago it had a blown head gasket. and it ran like crap.
We drove it to church today and then up to the airport to eat lunch. Came home and checked the oil and there was no indication of water in the oil. just changed it last week and it was still clean. I reved it up like last night and just the puff from the valve guides. I messed with the carb a little and it seemed to smooth out the motor a little more.

Could it have just been the fact we was in low range 1st and second gear. and it was really humid last night, I dunno......just gonna run it some more and see what happens.

    THANKS AGAIN GUYS!!!

Could have something to do with the humidity - when the humidity is high, the dew point will be close to the air temperature and condensation will be likely. Auto exhaust has a lot of water in it already, but usually the (colorless, odorless) steam exiting the tailpipe does not condense. When you see white smoke (in cold weather, for example), it is actually steam condensing into droplets. So it could be due to the weather ...

I'd expect a blown head gasket to make white smoke, but also to spit some water out of the tailpipe. Normally you can get a little liquid water from exhaust condensing in a cold exhaust system, but usually that goes away as the exhaust heats up.

I posted this back in June when my Jeep was smoking one night on the trail. Well today I ran across town to take care of a few things. Later in the day I noticed a few drops of antifreeze under it. So I checked the oil, you guessed it chocolate milk and the coolant was down some. Do you guys think it could have been leaking this summer but never really showed itself until now?

Kinda disgusted but thats how it goes sometime. I think i'm just gonna park it and finish collecting parts for a motor swap.

    thanks guys!!
