My CJ has the F-134 and stock 5.38s and stock tires. Just wondering what would be a comfortable road speed if I added a Warn overdrive?
    Thanks

I would enter your info in one of the many online calculators. Should get you pretty close.

Well, your main problem will be running out of power as speed increases, not gearing. Not a lot of power in reserve with a F134.

I do not have a lot of experience with these, but I recall that you can go 60-ish on the flat without a headwind.

I was so disappointed with the OD that I put behind my f134 that I got rid of it. An OD will only add 10% to you top speed. When your talking 45 to 50 mph top speed anouther 5 mph isn't worth the money your going to spend on one. Of course that's my opinion. The 10% to your top speed is a fairly accurate estimation.

Wow, I've never heard of anyone who was dissapointed with an OD in their Jeep before. According to the online calculator at Randy's ring & pinion
    http://www.ringpinion.com/Calc_RPM.aspx
    5.38 gears & a 29" tire equals 3740 RPM at 60mph.
with an OD (20%) at 3740 RPM you'd be going 75mph.
or at the same 60 mph you'd be turning 2992 RPM.

I want one behind my 134 in time I will have one. It would really help me out here in Ohio. You can split the gears in your t90 sometimes 3rd is too high and 2nd is to low so 2nd OD would be just perfect. Oh yeah add the kool factor of having 4 levers in the cab

had a OD with 4.27 gears and a F-Head, as stated you'll run out of motoer before your gears........I could do 65 on a flat highway if there was no wind, ad any up grade or headwind and 50-55 was max

I recently purchased reproduction data plates for a CJ3B who's drivetrain is identical to my CJ5's. It says top permissable speed is sixty-five MPH.

The overdrive provides a splendid option when you're going up hills that cause you to either wind your engine out all the way or chug along with the lifters tapping a staccato beat of how close you are to stall speed, and it's amazing how that seems to cover 95% of the hills you encounter. Overdrive also adds to your engine's lifespan and helps squeak a bit more milage out of a vehicle designed for ยข25/gal gasoline.

I also have a PTO and tell children that the five levers are for the machineguns, rocket launchers, and flame thrower, which I can't show right now because Cobra, the Decepticons, or Al Quaeda is trying to discover my secret identity.

The benefit of an OD isn't just higher top-end speed.

To be able to split-shift in other situations is handy as well. Seems like there are always trails where 2nd is too slow and 3rd too fast - kick in OD in second and it's perfect.

not to mention, better highway mileage and less rpm means less taxing on the motor to keep up with Highway speeds (most often with honorable effort:)
