My tcase is leaking more and I need to do something to slow it down. It appears to be coming from the pan. Is it just as simple as draining, taking off the lower pan and adding a bead of rtv silicone and putting it back on? Or are there any other tricks to be aware of? I know most all old jeeps leak a bit but this one is now a drip. It is the Dana 18 tcase with a t-18 attached. v6

    Thank you,

    Peter

I use the gasket and rtv, plus blue locktite on the bolts. It helps to get both surfaces really clean for the rtv-ethyl alcohol seems to work the best.

Very important to straighten the bolt flange of the cover, inspect for peaks where the bolt holes lie and carefully hammer them flat.. This will assure proper and consistent mating retention when you assemble back to spec.

This inspection is Often overlooked and one always get leaks.
same applies for all covers along the drivetrain including timing cover and oil pan. :tea:

i put mine on a sheet of glass with sand paper on top
and slid it back and forth so i could easily see high spots.
then tapped em down with a hard rubber mallet.
then i used a gasket in a can called THE RIGHT STUFF.
    not one drip!

this is one of my only success stories so i hadda tell it...;)

rtv is the best solution IMHO even if the pan is a little distorted it will seal it up. the best stuff i ever used came from ford, thinking it was for a ford escort, it was just a caulking tube filled with their special blend RTV. GOOD STUFF!!

The Right Stuff, or RTV Ultra Black, or Ultra gray is all I use. It really seals well. Make sure you put some sealer on the bolt threads as well.
Make sure the pan rail is straight and true like was said. Make sure you have good lock washers to keep the bolts from loosening up. Use a gasket with the sealer on both sides. The gasket will help take up any imperfections or distortions in the pan rail or pan.

Novak makes a billet alum oil pan for the D18. They are pricey, but I like the look of it, and Novak says they help with the leaks.

a well dressed surface and good gasket sealer will do it .
i dont know crap about jeeps
but i do know that with a straight edge and liquid gasket the outside of my case is bone dry.
