I have steering box locally I can get for $40 from CJ7. I want a tilt wheel column but dont want to pay for a flaming river column and then a steering wheel on top of that ... so obviously CJ7 will work, but would a YJ as well?

Why don't you use a power steering gear and your existing column? Pretty easy - a factory setup.

Tim he mentioned he wants a tilt wheel so the reason for the change.

None of the tilt columns will be a bolt in. Fab work will be necessary unless you go aftermarket for one that will fit directly. YJ can be made to work as can a later CJ. I put an XJ column in my CJ-6 but it was all custom anyway.

why wouldnt it be a bolt in, if I took the column shaft and gear all from same place? I can keep the stock column....ill have to change steering wheels if I keep stock column. Im 24 and that huge 18wheeler steering wheel wont cut it.

I did the P/S swap on my 72 a few years ago, mounting the steering gear and pump is fairly straight forward but if you have a 6cyl you will have to swap most of the accessories on the front of the engine (water pump, balancer, pulleys, timing cover and move the alternator to the passenger side of the engine) and if you have an early engine block there are no holes in the side of the block to mount the lower P/S pump bracket so you have to make and extra bracket to connect the pump to the former lower alternator mounting boss. You will also need a 72-75 CJ power steering pitman arm, the one off the CJ7 will fit but it won't work right. I kept my stock steering column and shaft, I had to order the bell coupler for a 72-75 with P/S. If you want to use a later CJ tilt steering column then you will have to do some fabricating to mount it but people do it all the time.

Ordered the power steering option when originally purchased in 72'. Presently have the dash loose (rewiring all systems and upgrading to 12 circuit fuse box, etc) and possible to take any pictures you possibly need? Let me know if we can be of any assistance or for any original pictures if needed?

well, the dash i have is junk, so thats not my concern...god gave us cutoff wheels didnt he ;), no seriously I want a 76+ dash if they measure width wise to fit, or could be cut to fit hehe. The firewall would need cut too, but its fiberglass so wouldnt be the hardest thing to do. On jeepforum I see a 73 redone with a racing steering wheel mounted to factory column and it didnt look bad he kept the manual box (blah).

I know you have to get the P/S coupler kit for $35. Ill need a drop pitman arm anyway, I just wanted to know if I should get the 72 or later pitman arm. Lets be hypothetical for 1 second, IF I was going to go get a 304 what year years would I look at for my 72(might not mate to T14 I have) but if Ima have to do all that work to a motor that needs rebuilt to put a PS pump on, maybe ill reconsider options.

I could be mistaken, but I think that the 258's and AMC v8's have the same bolt pattern. I have a 304 in my '72 now and will be doing the P/S swap soon but keeping my stock column. I aint a big guy so dont really need a tilt.
