I just picked up a windshield I won on ebay. It's got the bottom mount electric wipers to replace my wimpy top mount vacuum wipers which do me no good when pushing snow under a load. The windshield I got came complete with wiper motor and linkage. Here's the question. The motor has 3 wires - black, red, and yellow. I don't know a thing about this motor and before I hook it up to a battery, can anyone tell me whats what? I assume its a 2 speed wiper. black is ground, and the yellow and red are low and high? is this correct? I don't want to find out I'm wrong after I fry the motor. Thanks.
Here's a link of the auction. I got this thing for a steal, and was able to pick it up to avoid shipping costs.......

Yep. Mine are black, red, and green. They go into a switch mounted on the dash. Krage has one of those available:

    Good deal!

I expect there's more to it than two speeds and ground. There has to be a park circuit too so that the wipers will continue to the bottom of the windshield. My '77 manual is cut off in the center of the wiring diagram, but I can see that green is low, red is high and black is park. There's a '72 manual online at c104.net, which should be close to what your windshield needs.

high, low and park (wish i could remember which was which). ground is through the frame. on mine, i used a 4 wire trailer harness plug (ground on 4th leg) to make the frame removeable w/out alot of work.

    Here ya go:

As I understand this, only the park switch is grounded through the body. The two "running" circuits are grounded through the wiper switch. "Shunt" is the same as parallel - the shunt field must actually be anti-parallel to the main field since decreasing the current via the 24R increses the speed of the motor.

If you take the motor cover off, it should look like the picture. The feed wire, whatever color it is, is the +. Then, to identify the two remaining wires, start with both 1 and 7 grounded as in the picture. That will give the slow speed of the motor. One of the two wires is un-grounded to run the motor at high speed.

The switch will behave the same way. Both terminals will be grounded when at low, and only one at high. The wire that stays grounded for both high and low speed goes to the trerminal on the switch with the same behavior.

When you are testing this out, put a 6 amp fuse (or circuit breaker) in series in the + line from the battery. That way if you connect something backwards it'll blow the fuse and not something else.

You could also use a battery charger for +12 volt source.

The wiper is grounded through the case. The three wires are for the high, low, and park. When the 12 volts is removed from high or low, the 12 volts that is always connected to the park wire will cause the motor to continue to run until it reaches the park position. At that time a cam inside the motor assembly will disconnect the park wire from the motor and everything stops.

It has been a little while since I fooled with these, but you'll want to connect 12 volts to the park wire all the time, even with the wiper switch off. Then, if you also connect the 12 volts to either of the other two wires the wiper will run. If you remove the 12 volts to the wire, the motor should continue to run until it reaches the park position at which time it will shut off.

You can simulate the wiper switch by using a single pole double throw (SPDT) toggle switch to choose between high and low.

You'll need one 12 volt wire to a fuse (6 amps) to the park wire and branch that off to the center of the SPDT switch. The output of the SPDT switch should be connected to each of the other two wires.

This may sound like a bunch of gobbledegook, but once you actually get into it you'll be surprised at how straightforward it is.

Just a note -- the above does NOT apply when working with a Wrangler windshield. The grounding is different on them and you have to remove a ground wire first before you can do the above.

My 71 Jeep service manual shows, black is park, green is low speed and red is high speed.

Thanks for everyone's help. Hopefully the motor is good. The guy I got it from didn't know. What other motors would work for me if this one is shot? In '76 when the windshield was redesigned, the motor was moved to the inside of the frame. Will a '76-'86 motor bolt up? What about wrangler motors? I know the wiring is different and I know some later model motors had intermitant wipers too. I don't care about that, I just want to know what will fit on my '75 frame and hook up to the wiper linkage.....

These motors are availalbe from the aftermarket. I'd look at the range of years the same motor covers - that will indicate which motors will work.
