Now Nick has me thinking about the M/C in mine. When I get some time I am going to pull the cap and get a pic.

I'm thinking that if the two sides shared fluid and you lost a brake line you would eventually lose BOTH front and rear brakes when you ran out of fluid.

Nick, I think I understand what you're saying. If the slit or passageway is at the top neither side will be affected if the othe side loses it's fluid since the good side's fluid will only drain as low as the slit. In reverse, when filling from one side, once that side is full to the point of the slit it will start filling the other side.

    Do I have that right?

That's why there is a divider between the chambers of the reservoir. On some master cylinders (dual chamber) there is a slot or passageway that will allow sharing of the fluid, but it's at the top of the reservoir and does not go all the way to the bottom of the reservoir. That way fluid can be shared between the chambers but if fluid gets low then only one chamber can go dry, not both.

I mounted a similar version of this willwood tandem master cylinder (http://www.wilwood.com/MasterCylind...aspx?minorname=TM1 5/8 Tandem Master Cylinder) on my frame rail when I had the jeep torn down to the frame and was boxing the frame (mine has the two hole mounting flange in the casting near the rubber boot). The MC came with a couple of options for a remote reservoir. I just mounted the plastic remote reservoir on my firewall ran some rubber hose to a Y and then to each fitting on the MC. I'll add some pictures If I can get any that are helpful. its kind of hard to see....

I was able to rig up an adapter to keep the through the floor pedals. I was running discs on all for wheels and now have drums in the back. I also added two of these residual pressure valves to the front and rear brake circuits (one each) incase the MC was below the brakes.

I may add a 10lb residual pressure valve to the rear (because of the drums) but so far the brakes work pretty well.

    BINGO,
I think that is what my M/C has. Now I have to go take the cap off and look at it!
Thanks, and I am glad I am not losing my mind....yet.

Meh my MC is more different than the one posted above than I remembered, but I am pretty sure it is also 5/8ths.

Please note that the fluid you see on the MC etc is motor oil from the motor, and not leaking brake fluid. The valve cover leaks a little and so does the dipstick when the jeep is on its side or near there :)!

I would bet that you could get the reservoirs from Willwood if you wanted to, or the junk yard like vernco.com (not me)

i like that johnsotd. i never thought of drilling into the housing to fit a remote filler. but i dont see ahy that setup would work, and it would work on almost any master cylinder.

johnsotod..i like the idea of drill/tap the sides...might be easier than messing with the cap...

This is a comment on installing a remote reservoir in an early CJ with the stock master cylinder. I have successfully installed on two Jeeps.

1959 CJ5. The (Ford) reservoir was purchased from Herm.

1954 CJ3B. I found this reservoir on eBay.

Getting the attachment to the master cylinder to be leak proof can be particularly frustrating. There's two issues. While there is no pressure per se, you do have to deal with gravity feed. One -- the screw-on cap on the master cylinder needs to have a good gasket seal. Two -- the threaded fitting can be sealed a couple of ways. Using an tight 0-ring or applying a bit of silicon gasket/sealant, or a combination (which is what I had to do on the CJ3B). From my experience brake fluid will not break down silicon sealant. Let the sealant fully cure before you add fluid.
