I am working on a 1974 cj jeep its my dads but i thought i can get it running again. i was looking at to see what i need to do to get it started. It never ran since 1996. I got the carb rebuilt i just pulled the gas tank to recost the inside and replacing some of the gas lines. so do you think if i do that it should start. i pulled a dumbass move, i didnt label the distiburter wires and i pulled them off and dont know what wire came off what spark plug. How can i find out what goes to what. its a 258 engine straight 6.

    Thanks -Ryan

Ryan, check out the last pic in my build. The wires should be in order 1,5,3,6,2,4. Clockwise.
Set the #1 cylinder to Top Dead Center with the distributor installed. Then pop the top and see which wire it is pointing towards. That is the wire that should go to #1.

Also, if it has just been sitting its a good idea to prime the oil pump (Im assuming you changed the oil!) through the distributor hole with a priming tool.

Also today I was researching Seafoam and it seems to be somthing cool for old engines that have just been sitting.

Im sure other will chime in here, as I myself am just a rookie.

When the engine is at TDC on the compression stroke for #1 cylinder, the rotor should be pointing at the vacuum advance diaphragm. While you are in there, make sure the points look servicable. Not muddy or burnt.

After mine sat for around 7 years, I cleaned it up - same as you're doing, change oil, replace gas tank, rebuild carb....ran great. The only problem I had was the water pump bearings had rusted and it blew after only a few hundred miles.

    Good luck!
