paint: clear coat versus single stage

It's my understanding that epoxies are very tough, and have low health risk (compared to isocyanate catalyzed paints), but that they are not very UV stable. The surface will become chalky with long exposure.

This seems contrary to what you'd expect from marine paints though. Maybe it's a tradeoff between UV and humidity?

 

The guy that will be painting my jeep is the one that has been doing the restoration. He did tell me the Red would cost more due to the pigments. I wouldn't try painting the Jeep myself partly due to no paint booth and lack of experience. After reading all the posts I am strongly leaning toward BC/CC. Thanks for the information and opinions. I will post pics after the job is complete.

a shop may not do it or if they will they may charge more,but you can have both and if you use compatable paints.single stage with a clearcoat over it,holds up real good on-offroad

Having put myself through trade school decades ago working in a body shop, here's my 2 cents..................
IF.... you shot paint before, have a place that's dust free, a GOOD gun, BC-CC is the ticket.
IF.... Someone else is doing it- BC-CC and have him buff it to a shine that'll hurt your eyes!
If your gonna do it.....................
You can lay enough clear on it to make the color look deep, (even tint the clear).
Clear can be hard to shoot, runs happen..................
IF.....
You so-so painter (like me)
Shoot enamel.
it's not rocket science, but you gotta be careful.
If it's a so-so body, gonna be used and abused, (like mine), go to Lowes and pick your color out, and a few cans of spray to touch up!

My painter is experienced. I will likely be painting the interior single stage viper red and the exterior clear coat/base coat viper red. I will post pics as soon as it is done. Which forum do I post in though? I will have before, during, and after pics. I spoke with the painter today and he should be ready within a week or so (fingers crossed). paint job may be too good to take it off road.....
