just changed my '74 cj5 over to disc brakes ,disc setup is off of a '78 cj with the '78 proportioning valve ... went to bleed brakes and it looks like valve is leaking fluid where the rear brake line goes, its not the line but the valve itself leaking . my question is what years will interchange with '78 style and any one have one or know where to get one .... hate to have to spend a 100.00 on a valve :( figured i would check here first before searching around

Not sure how good of advice this is, but I know no one around here uses proportioning valves on a front disc conversion.

If it's leaking around the fitting (not around the brake warning switch) I would suspect the flare nut on the incoming line is distorted. These fittings will distort if someone uses an open-end wrench to remove or tighten. Flare nut fittings require a flare nut wrench.

When I said around here I meant people who live near me. Theres a bunch of flatty's and cj5's that have front discs with no proportioning valve. They'd put one in if they needed it, but never had problems. These jeeps are often in parades, daily drivers, and wheeling rigs. But like I said, not sure if this is good advice or not, probably just some stubborn hairy eared guys who work from experience.

    great portion valves thread.
I dont want to jack your thread but maybe you can answer my question ?
I am restoring a 76 cj5 and noticed that my portioning valve has a set of disconnected wires coming from it just a 2 wire tail. any ideas on where it goes would help out to get it on the road thanks.

Nothing wrong with starting a new thread with your question...

There's a wiring diagram in the complete '76 TSM posted at www.oljeep.com

It's a brake warning light switch for the dual braking system. Detects any pressure imbalance between the front and rear brakes, and sets off a warning light. Read the manual linked above.
