I know this has been asked a bunch, but it seems I never find the exact answer when I do a search & I've got a guy who is offering me a power steering pump, box & column & need to know if it will swap into my '74 CJ6 before I jump on it or miss out on it. The pwer steering stuff is from a '88 Wrangler (YJ) w/4.2L. Column is non-tilting. My CJ6 is equiped with the 232 straight 6 & Sag manual steering box. Will the '88 Wrangler stuff bolt up or would I need to get a steering box mounting plate from Mcruff?
    Thanks

You don't need to change your column for a power steering conversion, but you will need to convert your bell coupler. I used one from a mid 80's CJ7. I'm unsure about the Wrangler steering gear but I think it'll bolt to the cast iron mount you have for the manual steering gear. Then it's just a matter of a power steering pump and mount and a few hoses. When did Wranglers switch to the 4.0? An 88 power steering pump may fit but I think I read somewhere you might need to change the intake manifold to accommodate the PS pump.
I've got all the parts for the swap except for the manifold if it is in fact needed but just haven't gotten to that project yet.
I think McGruffs mount is for pre intermediate CJs.

I'd say get the Wrangler stuff if it's a good price.

Anyone want to chime in on the manifold question?

There are a lot of earlier posts about swapping in power steering. Try a Google search for "site:earlycj5.com 258 power steering conversion".

Mounting the steering gear is easy. Finding the right brackets and pulleys for your engine will be more difficult. If you try to use the Wrangler parts, I suggest that you take everything from the front of the donor engine - pulleys, brackets, water pump, everything. Measure to see if the new fan location is good for your CJ.

You'd think this swap would be easy, since the factory offered both manual and power steering. However, it seems much easier for the V8s, because the brackets and pulleys don't change as much from year to year. If you try to use Wrangler parts on the engine, you'll just have to find out by trying it... consider this before you spend a lot to find out.

Thanks guys, I'm going to look at the parts tomorrow or Sunday & will measure the distance of the water pump pully (from the face of the block) & see how it relates to the mounting surface for the pump bracket beforehand to see it they might line up. If need be I could get a friend to fab up a custom mount for the pump that would line up, that would save me having to try & swap out everything else on the front of the engine. Main thing I was worried about was the mounting of the steering box & either linking it up to the original column or would it be easier to install it with the Wrangler column.
