Have a question for you 2a guru's. I have a what I'm pretty sure is a 47 CJ 2a and the serial number is J248193. Went to get it inspected so I could tag it and the officer told me that the number didn't match for a 47...or anything for that matter. I did some internet searching too and it doesn't seem to line up with anything I've found either? Any ideas? :?

looks like an engine ser# to me. just the 2 and and J are reversed. my engine ser# has the same number of digits and letters as that one.

    CJ-2A 23598

    or something simliar I believe

Thanks for the great info. I also thought it may be the engine number but I know the engine isn't original because the previous owner replaced it. Now I have a title that doesn't match the body, frame or the engine. Anyone know of a way to get around that?

no tag on the body firewall ?
it was held on with two small screws

no number out on the LF frame horn ?
most steering conversions and/or bumper modifications displace it.

my title has the engine number as well, no serial number.
of course, that 4 banger is long gone.

Yep it has the tag on the firewall, but haven't looked for it on the frame. Unfortunately that's not the number on the title. Sounds like it is the engine number on my title...which was gone long ago I'm sure.

Wouldn't be a big deal but Kansas requires a VIN inspection when a vehicle is bought out of state. Talked to a highway patrolman (which do this inspection in Kansas) that luckily has done a VIN inspection on a Willys Jeep before. He confirmed that the one he did had the number on the engine and it matched the title. He tells me they can assign it a new VIN number since the motor is missing. They will stamp it on the frame and rivit a plate onto the firewall. I'll keep you posted how it turns out.

New tag and a set of stamps that match your title.

Well...I got lucky! The engine is the original one. The number is actually on the front of the motor, not the side or the head like I thought. Luckily my Highway Patrol buddy was able to to some more research. So...FYI, if the number on your title doesn't match the frame horn and firewall tag, look at the front of the engine. It is hard to find but a can of carb cleaner and was able to see it.

Thanks for all the input! it's tagged now.
