Steering Wheel disassemble. Please help

I am taking the body of my great grandfathers 1963 CJ5 to restore it. I have everything all ready for the body to be lifted off EXCEPT the steering wheel/shaft or whatever you call it.

I need to get the internal shaft out of the steering box down under the engine. I have it so the outer shaft cover moves in and out and got it so the internal one moves about and inch but thats all i could get

Please help...... I must be missing somthing here

Hey, thanks that picture helps a lot actually! I actually need to disasemble it down in the gear box (37). I have it so that the innershaft will come out about one or two inches but theres still something holding it.

 

Horn wire still connected on the lower end? Won't come up thru the hole if it is............There's a retainer for the lower bearing cage too, that may be hitting on the sector shaft if it's still attached. The cage is plastic, usually broken if the steering box hasn't had any maint.

 

There is an excellent book “Jeep CJ Rebuilder’s Manual” by Moses Ludel, I am in the process of rebuilding my 61 cj5 from the frame up and found the book to be very helpful.

 

To get the shaft out, you need to disassemble the steering box. I have found it easier to remove the entire box and steering shaft/tube/steering wheel as one piece. Just remove the drag link from the pitman arm, unbolt the box and pull the entire assembly up through the floorboards.

 

I ran into this yesterday, while disassembling one. If it's the same set up, you should have 3 bolts that connect the outer tube to the steering box. Once those have been removed, turn your steering wheel (not the outer tube) counterclockwise...this should spin the whole shaft out of the steering box.
